MSI vs Palit 4090 - Why the price difference...?

I'm very out of the loop on components nowadays and even more so on manufacturers. I've always lent towards named brands like MSI, Asus etc for GPU's but I note Zotac and Palit are coming in a lot more now. They are also notably cheaper. Given that overclocking on the 4090's is negligible on all the reviews I've seen I'm struggling to justify the price jump between Palit and MSI. Are there any justifiable differences?

Not that I can see it on the OCUK website, but is there a difference between Warranty, etc? Both cards have good coolers and the same clock speeds.

Just brand tax, mainly. Doubly so with Asus.

..and RMA warranty sucks no matter who you go with except maybe Gigabyte, who are alone amongst the big tech brands, AFAIK, in having a UK based RMA facility.

Coolers are far better on the main/more expensive branded ones. They sometimes have better support and most of the time have better quality components or even solder.

Zotac are the only 1 with a 5 year warranty afaik. Btw I paid £1699 for my MSI Trio 4090 which was as cheap as any 4090 at the time.

Zotac has a UK RMA centre, well they did last time I looked. Had a 2070S and 3080 from them and both solid cards with zero issues

I used to believe that but now I’m not so sure. They’re all much of a muchness these days IMO. You pay for the name and usually better warranty and support.

I had a palit 2080ti that got booked, they were ok with the warranty.

MSI were fantastic with warranty tbf though

I'd say that partly depends on which model you buy, for example: MSI and Gigabyte have some ***** coolers on their lesser cards, but I'd be surprised if a 4090 had a dodgy cooler

Less to do with warranties IMO and more to do with some AIBs being stuck with the mindset from 3-4 months ago where anything would sell while others are starting to realise the majority of people baulk at the idea inflated prices.

MSI Trio does not have a vapour chamber and their RGB software is terrible and did not work for me. Trio also limited to 450W.

I’ve had the 4090 Trio and GameRock and the latter was better in every department. Cooler performance, noise, overclockability. The only advantage for the Trio is the longer warranty.

I had a Palit 3080 one they first released and it was really really good (game rock card)
The cooler was so good in fact, even overclocked it never got too hot or loud.

One thing I did notice was that it was based on a custom pcb that wasn’t reference and didn’t seem to have any support for waterblock etc later down the line which, ultimately led me to sell.

Ah fair enough. They wasn’t available at the time and it actually ended up to my benefit as the eBay sale went crazy and that 3080 sold for pretty much 3090 pricing (miners hey). Effectively a free upgrade for me at the time.

Point being: I wonder if the 4090 gamerock waterblocks are late to the party as the 3000 series were?

I don't understand that either. How can a 4090 cost £1700 and another model is £2200+? Performance difference is almost non-existent. Is this 3rd party or OCUK greed?

i'm happy with my trio, the cheapest 4090, when benchmarking it reaches temps little or no different to most other 4090s from what ive seen, mine is quiet, mine is average overclocking wise but brand makes no difference to clocking ability - it's just pure luck, 450W max suits me as i only have an 850W psu. glad i went with a well known brand than some rubbish no name

If you are happy that's all that matters but comparing them side by side, the GameRock was just better in every department - bar warranty period where it sucks.

The funny thing was the Trio cost £2099 and the GameRock OC cost £1879.
