Pandemic 2.0?

Reminds of the ricky gervais joke about AIDS and someone catching it from a chimps :D

That poor dog

That just states that they're importing some EU-licensed smallpox vaccine, it doesn't say anything about existing UK stockpiles of smallpox vaccines just that that particular vaccine isn't in stock.

I'd be interested to know if anyone knows what the deal is here? Are they not permitted to use small pox vaccine stockpiles for this or is the vaccine stockpiled not as good as the one mentioned above?

Ditto to the US - are they dipping into their existing smallpox vaccines, IIRC they have enough stockpiled to vaccinate half the population, the UK's stockpile isn't public IIRC but supposed to be in the millions.

The only stockpile I've seen reference to was around 20 years ago. Do you have a source showing we have a current stockpile of millions of doses?

No like I said it's not publicly declared how many we have or had AFAIK, both the US and UK are supposed to have some stockpiles of smallpox in case of a terror attack or biological warfare.

I wonder if anyone knows whether the US has dipped into existing stockpiles or is only using newer vaccines too?

I have no idea as to specifics but something I've mentioned before - when I used to work as a lab assistant many years back there was lots of planning and preparation for stuff like terror attacks using chemical or biological warfare, etc. most of which has been shelved for a good 10 years now seeming without replacement, despite studies showing how high risk some of this is. I suspect stockpiles of stuff like smallpox vaccines have suffered a similar fate because some short-sighted accountant somewhere decided we'll never likely use them :s

Seemingly 32 million vaccines were purchased by the UK 20 years ago.

Some history on the US stockpile:

Millions of their doses expired which might have happened to our 20 year old stock.

if they only last 3 years as the bbc article says,
then given USA (declared unless sandbagging) limited doses and shared uk/usa intelligence, seems unlikely uk would have renewed theirs either;
sandbagging, from uk or usa would seem a foolish response for onlooking terrorist organisations.

they will probably rename it soon cos monkey implies racism or something woke like that
and now it's happening

Next they will have to start renaming animals

I know of no one actually offended by this. So ridiculous.
probably the rscists who think black people are monkeys, assuming everyone thinks the same way and has the same racist association.

I thought we were all kinda from monkeys with bonobo chimps being our closest animal relative

As the virus was originally discovered in monkeys it makes sense to call it Monkeypox does it not? has anyone actually explained what the racist element of the name is?

Someone obviously thinks money means a race of Humans, this just proves that they are the racists.

Typical liberal **** looking for racism were there is none, so perpetuates racism. Thick as ****.

You see it all time, taking offense for other people, when in fact no one is bothered.

For an organisation whose dodgily elected head wanted his friend, the tyrant, killer and dictator Robert Mugabe as the WHO's "Goodwill Ambasador" they seem very worried about the self perceived offence of the long standing name of a disease all of a sudden!

I realise that the underlying story concerning unknown viruses and bacteria laying dormant in the ice and/or permafrost for millennia is a very real one, but why do scummy tabloids, like The Sun, always present such stories in a manner that tries to induce fear?
