My 2070s is showing its age a little, I have a new 5800x3d CPU to fit and I wondering what's the right move GPU wise.

This will be the end for this build Ill start from scratch next time so I want to max out the 120Hz 3440*1440 monitor.

I'm thinking 3080? but that maybe just a little short?

Maybe the 7900 series is the way to go but I have a G-Sync monitor...is that even a consideration?

I don't believe the X35 officially supports Freesync as it uses the older G-sync Ultimate module (someone please correct me if I'm wrong), with that being the case unless you want to sacrifice VRR you'll need to stick with Nvidia.

I'm sure the 3080 would do a good enough job with DLSS or slightly reduced settings in some recent titles, but it's pretty expensive for a 2 year old card when bought new. Unfortunately the 4080's price is utter ******** so if you want more horsepower a used 3090 or Ti may be the way to go.

Selling your 2070 for around £250 and picking up a used 3080 for around £500 would net you a a +75% performance boost, if you wanted the 4000 series you'd get a further +50% but it would cost you 4x as much.

My kids are now PC gamers so the 2070 will get gobbled up by them
The monitor is a Acer predator 100/120Hz X34
Used 3090s seem to be around the 750 mark, the nvidia store has 3090tis for 1100 but then your more or less at 4080 money...
Ok so the 7900xtx is a non starter with my monitor.
Brand new 3080 now about 700 but they also gone and confused it further with a V2 3080...hard to keep up!

I agree a used 3090 would be a good bet for around £750 in your situation, just gives that extra bit of performance for the resolution with VRAM to spare.

Just because you have G-Sync doesn't mean it won't work with AMD. You need to check with owners of the same monitor.

A quick search and I found this...

It does not support adaptive sync - g-sync only.

I'm very similar to OP.
Acer Predator X34 (first edition, 100Hz version) proper Gsync, not Freesync
5800X3D

I recently went from 3080 > 3090 Ti
~30% improvement going 3080 > 3090 Ti. Sold my FE for £635, bought 3090 Ti for £815 so wasnt a bad upgrade and guess the extra VRAM will help in future. The only other option was 4090 FE at £1700 second hand (as out of stock) but that was obviously a lot more costly

Hope you dont mind me chiming in on this thread too, similar position to the OP.

Looking to upgrade GPU from a KAF2 GTX 1080 EXOC (Ryzen 3700X build) running a Dell AW3418DW-3440x1440 @ 120Hz G-sync

I have been looking primarly at a 3080 FE as I think only the FE will fit in my Fractal Meshify C (315mm with the lower front fan installed)

Any other models I could possibly look at, push comes to shove I'll have to do some case editing =D

i'm sure that monitor does work with adaptive sync on AMD. Its the same monitor I have

Picked up what I think is a low use 3090 for 750 with some sort of ebay discount I had to use by 12pm, so that pushed me over the line.

What a time to be alive when paying 750 quid for a 2 year old graphics card seems like a good deal.
