Hi all, i've just moved into a house whos previous owners had some sort of HIKVision video doorbell/intercom installed so there was a camera at the front door and a panel in their kitchen with a screen on it.

They have since moved out and have taken these with them and i've been left with a bare RJ45 cable sticking out of the wall outside and one in the kitchen.

It looks like all of the ethernet cables route back to a bedroom upstairs where they likely had a switch etc as there as some sockets downstairs too.

I need to buy a new doorbell but I was wondering is there a way of me using the existing RJ45 to wire in a doorbell? I'm assuming to use the ethernet that is installed i'll need some kind of PoE adapter or switch and a specific type of doorbell?

I'm not too fussed about having an internal intercom panel and will likely just cut that RJ45 in the kitchen and patch the hole up as it won't be needed.

Yeh that is all I was able to turn up too.

Tbh, with the cost of some of the video doorbells that are around it would probably make as much sense to just rebuy the Hikvision Video Intercom system they had before.

Thinking about it more it might make sense to do that as there is existing ethernet wiring for the external video cameras they removed too which were no doubt Hikvision.

The other option is you use the cable that is in place simply to power whatever doorbell you pick, and then you have a much larger choice.

Unifi G4 Pro is another.

You could always use the cable to power a regular wireless doorbell too.
How do you power it with the eth cable? Just make sure the other end goes into a PoE switch or PoE injector? As it currently isnt connected to anything on the other end.

Just use 2 of the wires for power, connect the required transformer to the other end. That's exactly how mine is powered.

Or just wire it directly to a power supply. You're basically reusing the cable as a power cable, so instead of wiring it to the ethernet jack on the doorbell, wire it to the power pins.

Dahua call them VTOs, Hikvision‘s kit is under £200 and you can access it from their phone app as well. Both Dahua and Hikvision kits nicked a 10/100 PoE switch, a 7” touchscreen monitor and the doorbell.

If I already had the doorbell wired, I wouldn’t be messing about with Ring or Eufy.

There is no traditional doorbell wiring at all in the house, just an ethernet sticking out the wall where the old hikvision doorbell used to be (unless thats what you mean). I imagine the 7" touchscreen from the Hikvision acted as the actual doorbell chime on the previous owners kit.
Maybe it would be easier to just add the same kit again.

That’s precisely what I mean. They’ve wired it for you so just get the same/better kit and use that.

Not sure I really need the video intercom side of things at the moment though, but you might be right. Will have to by a PoE switch too by the looks of things.
