Drivers driving with no headlights in the dark

This is exactly the issue, modern dashboards are illuminated regardless whether the lights are on nor off, older school drivers associate an illuminated dashboard with the headlights being on, the fact they can’t see the road ahead seems not to be enough of a clue that this isn’t the case…..
It’s very likely this, especially with drivers whose previous vehicle wasn’t an all singing, all dancing model where nothing lit up without at least side lights being on.

I went from a 2017 Honda CR-V with auto everything to a 2017 Dacia Duster where everything* is manual.

* Dacia’s everything being somewhat less things than Honda’s everything.

It's easier done than many people realise. If you're driving around town with decent streetlights and you've got DRLs on with an illuminated dashboard, headlights actually don't do much to illuminate an already lit road.

It's not difficult to understand how this happens.

It shouldn't be difficult to remember to turn your lights on when it's dark. It should be like putting your seat belt on. Automatic.

It should be but it isn't because you do the seat belt every time, there's another mental step involved for putting lights on (is it dark?).

My wife has got into the habit of always putting her lights on, even during daytime now. I think she secretly wants an old Volvo ;)

Flashed an oncoming car the other day who didn't have their lights on. Got a series of flashes back along with a rude gesture as they passed me
Did you use morse code.
Random flashing of lights means nothing.. Or in reality slow down as there's a speed strap ahead....
If I see someone with no lights I will flash then turn my lights off and on a couple of times.

There was a myth spreading in Birmingham about gangstas driving without lights on, and anyone that flashed them got chased down and assaulted lol.

Think this stems from some occurrences in America maybe back in 70's/80's where it was a right of passage for gang initiations, just drive without lights and attack and kill whoever flashed you first.

Never turn my auto light on now since driving in fog -came out of fog and they went off -went back into fog and they stayed off -got a lot of flashes.
Mate also doesn't use them as they came on and driver coming out of side road thought he had flashed them out. He said it was close.

Only if you're completely braindead. Surely anyone with even a modicum of common sense would see someone flashing them and think "why might they be flashing me" and then notice their lights aren't on?

Oh wait, I live in Birmingham, I take that back, it makes perfect sense! :(

Common sense would mean they'd check to see if your vehicle is safe to drive before setting off. So if no lights are on I assume there are not lights on in the driver's head either.

Have no idea why people switch off their auto lights. Only switch them off when going to park in MOT garage

can be a case if you get the car serviced, and they turn them off.

mix in sufficiently bright drl's, a constantly backlit instrument cluster, not doing much night driving and being in the habit of just assuming the lights are on auto......

See the odd one side out but not all out

I’ve been caught out but usually realise or someone flashes

got back from India recently and it’s a common occurrence there and in pitch black too

I've done this just this last week as I was behind a qashqai, driving on a unlit stretch of a motorway.

When I went to overtake him I saw the bloke practically stuck on his windscreen just above his wheel struggling to see. I tried getting his attention but I guess he had to use all of that on the unlit road ahead.

I see this from time to time, usually exiting car parks etc and they soon realise before turning them on.

Even if I want to turn my Auto lights off a message remains about turning them back on blocking half of the dash!

You also have to remember that headlights aren't required on lit streets, so don't go flashing those people.

People sitting on the footbrake at lights should be shot though.

I'd forgotten that, headlights aren't required on lit streets? Surely that needs to be updated? With the invention of DRL we now have the scenario lights on at all times, which makes this rule a bit of an odd one.

People sitting on footbrakes are often driving autos. Apparently it's better for the gearbox to keep it in drive and stay on the footbrake. I've also been told that new drivers are told to use footbrakes because the brakes are then applied to 4 wheels instead of 2.
