I don't really know much about boilers, but I have an original build potterton boiler.

Looking at possible alternatives along with.replacing some old radiators from Screwfix

I won't be doing the work but I'd get someone to do it,

What I'm looking for is something that's not a hassle and dies, a boiler that's reliable that can heat the 2 bed mid terrace well (quicker than the current boiler), comes with control and thermostat, and not have to sell a kidney or two for it possible with parts and labour and if poss eco and cheap to run? (If that's even a thing these days)

Any cheap deals or ways to get money off ?

Thanks all.

Only research atm

I'm not an expert but I have a Glow Worm Flexicom 24CX (now discontinued) linked to a Honeywell thermostat and it does a reasonable job.

Worcester Bosch are a leading brand although may be relatively expensive, and Vaillant is the other major one I've heard of. I think both are German so that would say something for the quality of engineering.

Probably better to get it from a mainstream boiler place IMO. They aren't much more expensive than getting it yourself tbh. Expect about £2.5k for a decent combi. I went with BAXI in my mums house.

When we refurbed our last house we put in a Worcester Bosch. The output was sized for the house and fittings at the other end (one cloak, one bath with shower over), if they are serviced every year with a WB accredited plumber they have a 10 year warranty.
I would also consider Vailant if I were in the same position again.

We have a three bes, originally a old 25yo boiler and replaced the open water system at the same time. A few things:
* the gas pipe required by the new boiler is 22mm vs the old 15mm.
* originally it was quoted as a 28CDi but I asked for that to be boost to a 32CDi as it gave more HW heating capacity - now we have a rain shower so that makes use of the extra capacity.
* we had the CH powerflushed. The entire old open water tank, immersion heated tank was replaced by a closed system and the CH has a magnetic filter in the return.
* later a large vertical rad replaced two smaller rads in the kitchen and a large towl radiator in the bathroom means the CH capacity allows high delta for a cooler return.

Happy with the performance.

How much did you pay out of interest?

I'm sure someone will do the sizing for you, but one thing I have noticed (to the OP) is that my boiler has been sized purely for the DHW. Its capacity for the heating is too much, so it ends up short cycling all the time because it can't deliver the 7 kW that it wants to. That's really irritating. If I were buying a new boiler right now, I'd consider a smaller size so that the boiler could run for longer in heating mode.

In surrey IIRC it was about 3-4K. That also involved relocating the boiler into the attic against a gable wall.

True, it doesn’t seem too fussed. It’s 4l/m rate more HW IIRC. We also have a lot more radiator coverage. As the system circulates and heats separately typically it heats longer cycle if the rad thermostat on the boiler is moved towards economy.

OK that's about right then. I paid £7.7k for relocation and water tank (system boiler) plus 6 rads relocating (3 in entirely new positions).

Actually I've only paid £2.7k at the moment because he hasn't asked (despite me chasing) for the remaining £5k lol.

Probably wants it in the next financial year/month.. or simply too busy..
