Lucky escape...

Lucky escape? More like overly dramatic exit! Man could have just popped his seatbelt and hopped down the ladder loooool

Surely at that point it was probably more dangerous to eject and not have the chute open properly than just wait it out

The problem with these increasingly automated aircraft going wrong is that when a system you can't access or is difficult to access quickly messes up during a rather dangerous part of a flight the decision to eject ends up being the only conclusion available as the pilot hardly has the time to call support staff due to a bug in the coding.

I thought the same, but I guess it depends on what failure the system was reporting to the pilot. Maybe the eject mechanism has an automated engine cutoff which was what caused the plane to stop shortly after ejection.

Got to be a difficult decision because you know there's a good chance you'll hurt yourself ejecting on the ground.

Does the seat have it's own parachute?

If not then it could ruin someones day!
