Hi,

I want to buy/build a new PC delivered in time for Xmas, so parts need to be in stock. I just need the PC, no ancillaries. My main activity is video editing using Davinci resolve, VR, and gaming at 2k (MSFS, Cyberpunk). My current system spec is below. I don't plan on using any of the old components as I will probably pass the system on to a family member.

I've seen the ex-demo prebuilt system below which is a bit over my budget, but I could stretch. Would I be much better off building myself? What would £2500 get me?

I have gone with a bit of a white theme but not gone to hard to avoid the "white tax" on items.

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £2,647.82 (includes delivery: £0.00)

13 gen intel chip.
The 4080 is a potential place holder as there are no 3080/3090 in stock from OCUK. You can get a one or a 3090 founders from other places for less than the 4080 saving a few hundred potentially on your final choice.
ATX 3 psu
pcie-4 drives
The riser cable bundle is there to save moneey on the stock P400 case. Good airflow case and water cooling to control the i7-13700k.
All in stock.

The 7900X performs well, but I'm not sure AMD GPU is a good choice for productivity & VR, but anyhow, an all-AMD alternative:

AMD Ryzen 9 7900X Twelve Core 5.60GHz (Socket AM5) Processor - Retail - £449.99
Asus TUF Gaming B650-Plus (Socket AM5) DDR5 ATX Motherboard - £229.99
TeamGroup Vulcan 32GB (2X16GB) DDR5 PC5-44800C36 5600MHz Dual Channel Kit - Black (FLBD532G5600HC36BDC01) - £149.99
Sapphire Radeon RX 7900 XT Gaming 20GB GDDR6 PCI-Express Graphics Card - £899.98
Arctic Liquid Freezer II High Performance CPU Water Cooler - 360mm - £119.99

WD Black SN770 2TB SSD M.2 2280 NVME PCI-E Gen4 Solid State Drive (WDS200T3X0E) - £159.95
WD Black SN850X 2TB SSD M.2 2280 NVME PCI-E Gen4 Solid State Drive (WDS200T2X0E) - £229.99

Phanteks Eclipse P600S Silent Midi Tower Case - Black - £139.99
Phanteks AMP 1000W 80 Plus Gold Modular Power Supply - £149.99

Grand Total: £2,545.76

It's a sort of awkward budget atm because for those uses an Nvidia card probably makes more sense, but there seems to be a gap in availability between the 3070Ti and 4080, but the 3070Ti would be a bit underpowered for this build while the 4080 is pretty universally panned as poor value for money at the current price! (ignoring rtx 3090Ti FE cards which are available but no longer make sense now you can get RTX 4080 cards for very slightly more).

For 1440p gaming an RTX 3080 would still be a good option, and looks like you can get a new one for just under £700 elsewhere. That's not particularly great value for money either though considering it's still above the FE price and it's a last gen card. Maybe an RTX 4080 is actually the best high-end option in this scenario.

One suggestion for the Intel build would be going for this motherboard instead as it gives you another M.2 slot, and with gaming plus video editing you might be wanting more storage in future, and Nvme drives are a lot neater and faster than adding Sata SSDs: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/giga...-lga-1700-ddr5-atx-motherboard-mb-5bm-gi.html

Thanks, I really like the spec. Could I use the i7-13700K (CP-6B7-IN)? I assume it's the same chip with no onboard graphics? I'm also not fussed about the white theme if there are any other alternatives.

Are the riser cables still likely to be an issue?

In what way? If your thinking performance drop between pcie3 and 4 is 2-3% at most so not something worth thinking about.
I recall seeing some YouTube videos saying that in certain setup the GPU was not being detected when using a riser cable. But that was awhile ago now, I guess things have probably moved on.

I have used a riser card for over a couple of years and have never had any issues with non-detection. maybe they cheaped out and bought poor quality ones.

In all honesty I only picked the case with the riser card as it was slightly cheaper than the stock case with the riser. Just gives more display options. If no one can see your gpu in the window then dont use one. Sell it off and make some money back :)

You're better off upping the budget by £400 and getting a 4090 it's a much better card and a generation ahead of the 4080 on performance.
Thanks, it's always difficult knowing where to draw the line. I started out thinking I'll spend £2K and then convinced myself £2.5K is OK, then £2.7K etc. The 4080 should comfortably do everything I need it to for a few years hopefully.

The 4080 is such a bad card for it's price though, Nvidia is using the 70 class die which sold for £525 last gen and now they want £1200 for it.

Agreed £1200 for a 4080 is a joke.

Buying a 4090 will invoolve getting a bigger psu though so more costs go up :(

Pick up a new 3080 for about £750 and just enjoy saving over £400!!
