Hi all

looking to upgrade my Asus x570-p and 3900x to a 7900x. Not sure what motherboard to go for?
I have 32GB (16x2) of Crucial Ballistix DDR4-3600 so guess this will need to upgrade to DDR5? Also want to keep my Galahad 260 AIO which seems to work with the 7900x

Thanks

Have you thought about a budget?
Do you need wifi?
Are you using muliple NVME drives?

Yes you will need ddr 5 6000 mhz as thats the sweet spot for ryzen. Try and find the tightest timing you can afford.

Assuming your happy with Asus boards.

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £869.93 (Includes shipping: £0.00)

Unfortunatly AMD am5 boards are still quite expensive atm. The chip drop in price has helped its value for money.

Memory idea

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £269.99 (Includes shipping: £0.00)

In my view The best motherboard for the 7900X would be the ASUS ROG Zenith II Extreme Alpha. It supports DDR5 memory and has a robust power delivery system to ensure that your CPU is running at its best. It also has a great feature set, including support for up to four M.2 drives, USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports, and a 10G Ethernet port. Additionally, it has a great cooling system, with a large heatsink and fan to keep your CPU running cool.

That board is for threadripper not AM5.

Just remember to make sure you bios is up to date and supports the 5800x3d before swapping them over :p

Just remember the 5800x3d is poor compared to its counterpart in anything non gaming. The 5900x is a good alternative especially at higher resoloution.

Check reviews.

Got to be careful when giving advice that you're not going to cause an expensive mistake!

Think I might go for the 5800X3D for now and upgrade when the AM5 stuff comes down in prices.
This is a pretty decent move if you're purely gaming. Big uplift in gaming performance without the big cost of AM5/DDR5. Also the 3D versions of the 7800/7900/7950 are imminent and should be very interesting.

Been running the 5800x3d for afew days now and have to say its been so much better than the 3900x.
One thing with my Crucial 32GB 3600mhz memory, I could never run it at the XMP profile as it would always crash unless I ran it at 3200mhz for some reason.
With the 5800x3d it works straight off the bat, so not sure if this was just a 3900x thing or not. Games like Farcry on ultra I haven't had a single glitch or sluggishness with the 5800x3d. Happy days.
