COVID-19 (Coronavirus) discussion

I'm no vaccine denier, and I do not drink from the fountain of the foil hat. After having the virus, I just don't see the need to be actively seeking any more vaccination though...
I know people back home who've had 4 vaccines, and still had the virus and complained how bad it was. Are they truly effective?

The whole point of vaccines was to reduce hospitalisations.

All I can say is with this latest outbreak around where I live people who've been vaccinated are back on their feet within 48 hours with just a bit of a cough and fatigue lingering which in most cases is mild - but they've certainly had a very rough first night with it. Whereas those unvaccinated have had a more traditional case of it wiping them out for a week (and probably longer).

I am kind of concerned though that those vaccinated recently seem to get hit pretty hard that first 24 hours - far harder than those unvaccinated, though they get back on their feet faster - I do wonder if that harder peak could be too much for some people vs a longer period of being sick.
I've been vaccinated 3 times, the mrs has been vaccinated 4 times+flu jab.

So it will be interesting to see. I got hit hard, now it feels like I'm recovering (after having something to eat). The mrs is still going through shakes on the sofa under multiple layers.

Yup I was the same.
The aches the pains not nice.
Now still an annoying cough here and there.

But nearly there.

Unvaccinated

Must mean the 2 I had last year were amazing. As I'm still alive.

As Lysander said, the vaccines are to hopefully stop hospitalisations, serious illness or death and they've done an excellent job of that.
After I had 3 vaccinations, I had Covid 3 times and I'm 100% sure because of my comorbidities the vaccines helped me to get Covid that was way less than a cold.
Some people may not be so lucky, for instance the first time one of my daughters gave it me and she was very poorly and honestly thought she'd killed me, I sat there thinking when is this cold going to kick in.
And yes it was confirmed Covid tested at the hospital.

I have caught something that's really given me a cough -I think it might be the Flu as I am having coughing fits with pain in chest -Wife goes out and get's a Covid test kit (first one since it all started) . I have now waited for the 15 min and it's negative.
My temp 36.6 so normal but chest was red hot last night. Cooled down now so other than this bloody cough I feel OK.

Those who have had it - now have my sympathies if this cough is anything to go by - You never really know untill you get something you have never had before. I have had coughs but nothing as bad as this.

The second time I caught covid it was 3 days from when symtoms started before I tested positive. I then tested positive for another 5 days.

Well other than maybe 5 people. The plane I was on yesterday had no one else not even staff wearing masks. Even at the airport you barely saw one. Seems that people are not bothered or not being as badly affected I guess?

That’s a new one.. i knew my throat was sore but benylin hurt through codine that is made my hands tingle.
Better get some food down me whilst the codine is working.

My wife caught COVID in the middle of last week. My daughter tested positive two days ago, and yesterday it finally got me too.

This is the first time I've caught COVID, and it's a very mild case; no worse than a regular cold. I spent a day and a half in bed, drank lots of juice, and took cold & flu tablets to alleviate the symptoms.

Now I'm feeling close to 100% again, with a light sniffle.

Extremely high numbers of people in this country have had the vaccines, and extremely high numbers of people are getting through the virus fine now. What difference would it have made if people had used the super-awesome Western vaccines?
Everyone would have still caught the virus...

Because the 'super-awesome Western vaccines' are better at preventing deaths?

I 1st caught COVID at a Christmas party last year then 2nd time six months later when away for my birthday so fully expect to catch it again this sharing season ;)

I've now had 4 vaccinations & the worst symptom so far was minor sniffles so hopefully it won't be any worse this time :)

This is why we needed lockdowns :s my brother is the only one who has attempted to isolate himself, everyone else tried to continue pretty much as normal after the first 24 hours or so despite likely being infectious, my sister, with her young daughter, has decided to come down for Christmas despite it being in the house and now both my parents have caught it.

Fortunately no one is that ill so far and most are over the worst unless my sister or niece go down with it bad but that isn't the point and it is kind of worrying how quickly it has gone around.

Still negative so far myself somehow.

Are they dealing with a variant that the vaccines are effective against?

If they are dealing with a subset mutation of Omicron, then their vaccines help, but based on the HK data, Sinovac has a 3% mortality rate vs Pfizer's 1.5%, which is massive when scaled up. The numbers will only get worse depending on how bad the variants they deal with are, as HK's data deals with the earliest waves of Omicron.

Meanwhile in the west with boosters + bivalent vaccines, your chances of death from COVID itself, unless seriously old/ill, are virtually(!) nil at this point.

On day 5 of Covid. First time I've tested positive though I now know this is the 3rd time I have had it and by far the mildest.

Hideous shuddering vision and headache on Sunday, not too bad but tired on Monday, awful feeling yesterday with a new cough and runny nose, today a ringing in my ears and no real cough and a bit of a runny nose. Still testing positive but likely to totally change our Christmas plans as we are due to go and see family (3 in their mid to late 70s) so it's not worth it. Managing to sleep for hours (did 12 hours last night!!!!)

Hope to be over it by Friday.

had 3 jabs for what it's worth. Didn't get the winter booster yet and probably won't now.

Had to transfer a red patient (C+) from ward to x-ray the other day. All nurses were in full PPE, as was I, and this numpty on the bed refused to even wear a mask. Grabbed the Ward Sister and asked if there was any medical reason why he couldn't wear a mask for transfer, besides him being an odious waste of oxygen, and she said no. I explained to him that the mask was more for the safety of others as we'd be going through the hospital, yet he still refused and kept on bleating about being late for his x-ray. So I took the Ward Sister to one side, told her I was refusing to transfer him and that other arrangements would have to be made.

He was not too happy. Apparently he was still ranting and raving a few hours later because now there was a high probability he'd be stuck in hospital over Christmas. :D

My parents had the booster a few weeks back, they both had a fairly hideous night with it (COVID) but back on their feet but lots of sniffles/coughing and sleeping a lot of the day.

Sorry about that. But you might get lucky, hub x-ray were doing C+ patients as they closed down for the night in order to minimise downtime for non C+ patients. So there is a chance he was taken in later that day, assuming someone had beaten talked some sense into him. But who knows?

They'll probably moan until someone more of a push over does it TBH.
