6500XT 4GB as a stopgap GPU. Yay or nay?

Got a RTX 3070 in my system until the end of the year (borrowed).

Will need something that can at least run games after that.

6500XT 4GB is around £100, and it will 'run games' at low resolutions as in, they shouldn't immediately crash, and the drivers actually support Windows 11...

Can probably sell it without losing much cash in 2023.

Long term, will probably want something like a RTX 4070 or RX 7700 XT, when these release.

I will most likely wait until the post Christmas sales to decide...

NNNnnnnnnnnnnnnooooooooooooooooooo, but yes. It's around a 580 with PCI-E 4.0 @ 1080p, drops to 570 (or worse) at higher resolutions, especially if you exceed the VRAM. For £100 it's alright.

It's a shame that the RX 5500 XT 8GB is hard to get these days for a good price. That's probably better than the RX 6500 XT 4GB, RX 480 8GB, or RX 580 8GB.

AMD could really have released a RX 6500 XT 8GB by now...

Why do they keep labelling things XT lol. When it's the only one they ever intend to release (there's no non XT version for many cards).

Maybe a RTX 2060 6GB?

Judging by the results, it looks like 6GB is enough for this card at 1080p.

If I buy one, I get to play my games at 1 frame per second with RT enabled :)

Or, a Vega 64 with 8GB of VRAM.

Not much chance of finding a 2060 at a price that reflects performance. Everyone else pretty much sums up the situation well with what's available. OCUK as well as others who had discounted have put prices back up on 6500/6600/6700 cards.

Is it any wonder i've barely gamed since 2020. I like the borrow from Jeff option however!

If he can get one for £100 I'd bite their bloody arm off, alas, I think that's unlikely.

This man will fix you up with your 1 fps:

Can't say from experience, but from watching Digital Foundry it can be very good. Though personally i'd put raw performance ahead of such features and not let it sway me where budget is concerned. It's something that is certainly nice to have if newer games support it. When talking 1080p i can't really be sure if i'd want it or not to be honest.

I bought a used Vega 64 with 8GB VRAM for £140. It supports FSR 2, and there's a registry hack to add resizable bar support also...
