Hi all,

So Ive got an old 2016 build im replacing:
- i3 haswell 4170 CPU
- Radeon Rx580 GPU
- Corsair RM 550W PSU

I'm not going all out high-end but want something capable of gaming pretty well and it will be more than good enough for me work wise.

I currently use a MSI Optix Mag34" curved ultrawide monitor ( 3440x1440), and "might" upgrade to a a 49" 5120*1440 at some point next year. Obviously my current setup struggles at times!

- Is what im proposing below going to cut it? I find having been through this process many times there tends to be mission creep and before you know it you've spent twice as much and cant really tell the difference unless your a hardcore gamer insisting on maxing everything out for years to come.

- Is a 5800X or 5700 really make any noticeable difference for extra 100quid? Is a RX 6600 still going to struggle on games on ultrawides if I down grade the GPU!?

- Whats the chat on RAM these days is 32GB standard or 16GB more than ample for most users?

- Also assume the PSU should be replaced at same time being 6 year old 550W?

I am assuming whatever the case its a substantial upgrade from my current system, and its not worth keeping my RX580 GPU..? Also is it best to wait till just after Christmas for better deals or are these it, id like to build within the next 3 weeks ideally.

Many thanks

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £941.60 (includes delivery: £11.70)

You want a 6700xt at least for you ultrawide , could drop to a 5600 to save £30 as they perform very simmlar. Going to a 5700x may prolong the life of your pc but for an extra £100 mite not be worth it.

Memory 16gb is ideal but games are getting hungry for ram , you can get 16gb of teamgroup 3200mhz for £45 or 32gb for £80

Case is nice but at a £130 isn't budget option and you want a 650w psu or better for future upgrades.

Rx 580 either sell it or keep as a,back up.

For the latter resolution (5120) I'd downgrade to a 5600 non-X, get cheaper RAM and then buy the RX 6800 instead. Reason being, the pixel count is closer to 4K than 1440p and a 6600 is definitely not what I'd buy for that!

Agree with Mickyflinn, an AMD 5600 would be a good bang for buck option, and at only £83 I think I'd go for 32gb RAM: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/team...-3200mhz-dual-channel-kit-grey-my-0aj-tg.html
Most games won't need that much and 16GB will be fine, but it may make a real difference for some, and new games are getting more and more hungry...

Especially if you upgrade your monitor the gpu will be the limiting factor on game performance, so I'd spend as much money as you can justify to yourself on that :p

Of course one option is to stick with your RX 580, do the rest of the upgrade and see how you fare, and then budget for a graphics card soon down the line.

For 1440p ultrawide you already know how it performs really (assuming you're GPU limited right now, check your load conditions). Are you really going to be doing a lot of gaming at 32:9?

I may have gone for the 6900 xtu red devil in the clearance as the insurance option .... Still at £650 seemed fair value...relatively..

btw i got the thermaltake 850w psuz will that still bee okay to power this card? Was thinking of slightly undervolting the gpu as well

so for summary I opted for:

5600x Ryzen
MSI Tomahawk B550 mobo
32GB team group vulcan ddr4 3200mhz
Powercooler RX 6900 XTU 16GB
850w Thermaltake toughpower gold
Peerless assasin 120 cooler
and a load of new SSDs and an NVMe sssd

~Fractal North Chalk mesh case cause i love it and fits my house decor :)

That looks pretty solid and has a 10 year warrrenty just incase anything fails in the future.

Thats should be a good 1440p build with an upgrade to a better cpu if needed in the future.

Did you get a better case?? :P
