HAHA taking an EV on holiday (It worrying that i may have to own one of these EV one day :( )

Members of a Tesla driver’s Facebook group reported waiting nearly three hours to charge their cars in Tebay.

Been here over an hour. Still 15 in front of me in the queue for a charge,’ one user said, ‘easily another two hours to wait – minimum.’

On Twitter, a Tesla car owner who braved the queue said: ‘Really upsetting to have whole family wait for two hours to charge car.’

In Westmorland, north-west England, an electric vehicle driver said the scene at a motorway charging station was ‘bedlam’ yesterday.

‘Two-hour 30-minute wait for a charge,’ he said. ‘Worst journey as (a) Tesla driver. Q now 40 deep!’

‘Currently car 15 in a queue of over 20 … but you can always rely on the British public to make an orderly queue.’

It's because we haven't got the infrastructure sorted out here yet, surprise surprise. Norway are light years ahead of us. Never had to queue there.

There are far far worse places to be stuck for nearly 3 hours than Tebay services (I assume the charger is there).

Always does my head in we haven't lead with a well thought out, comprehensive charging network first - like the intelligent thing would be to do, even though that does have to be paid for at some point.

Has the uptake on EVs been sufficient yet to warrant enough investment?
I don't see many about, except Teslas "on the books".

Same here, We only have a few slow 7.2kw public chargers in the whole island as far i know

A few hotels over here have them but guessing i don't think they would like the random public charging there cars on them..

You probably don’t pay enough attention. Many look like normal ice cars(surprise) but yeah from people I know who have Evs they said time after time that infrastructure is very much behind where it needs to be. Add the fact that many chargers don’t work, many people leave their cars plugged in on full charge for hours etc etc. it’s basically a mess. Countries like Norway do it right. Uk obviously is a mess. As expected.

I definitely pay attention - I'm "into" cars. I've not seen many EV6, Ioniqs, BMW M40, Skoda Enyaqs etc about.
Obviously not many EV vans about and most taxis around here are still 2015 Passats.

Were they Tesla chargers in that pic, if not shows how much of the market they are still.

Atleast the Tesla network has some thought and organisation behind it. Non-Tesla EV charging is total mess - numerous different charging companies needing different accounts and apps, offering a range of speeds and interfaces, often very few chargers and not uncommon for one to be blocked for hours by another car or be out of action.

With living in guernsey if i did buy an EV it most likely be something small like one them little honda E cars

This is the last trip i did in england when i went over to get my dog from wales (Meurig Kennels),
I always wondered how much hassle it would have been if i did this in one of them little honda E cars

Most days doing any real mileage I see the odd Leaf and Zoe as well as Teslas and 1-2 other brands. It is like 1 in 100 cars if that.

Uptake would be better with the infrastructure in place, though the cost of the vehicles is still going to be a hurdle.

Depends where you live. 1 in 10 here.

The biggest problem over here is that there are no chargers at all for people that only have on street parking..

I got no idea how there going to sort this as i can't see anyone fitting multi chargers down random streets everywhere

Down every street before every car switches to an EV. I think we’d need a few more power stations too.

I thought the mileage on a charged Tesla was supposed to be reasonably good. Did these people not charge at home before the journey, or is charging at a service station free or something?

Guessing the cold weather & having the car loaded up with the family & Luggage would knock the range down a fair it

Quite easy to burn through 300 miles especially if you can't charge wherever you're going for the weekend. My EVs range is worse than most Tesla and it's rarely an issue apart from trips where you can't charge at the destination.

The cold reduces it a fair bit. Depends how far they were going I guess.

That's shocking. How much of a reduction are we talking about? 10%? 50%?

300 miles should get you from London to Manchester. I appreciate charging at destination may add some challenges, but surely people think these things through - most of these people will have traveled to their destinations on Christmas Eve so would have had a couple of days to recharge even on a slow charger?

It surely beats sitting in a service station for 2-3 hours waiting for the car to charge up to then have to drive 2 hours home.

My Pug is about 170 max in the cold versus a reported 230. So pretty outrageous.

Service station super fast charger isn't 2 to 3 hours. More like 30 to 40 mins to get to 80%
