3070 to 3080.... Is it worth it

Hi. I had a complete new system built nearly 2 years ago during covid. I did have the money to have a 3080 but could not get one so opted for the 3070. Now due to my father being generous Christmas I am now able to consider getting a3080. Would it be worth the extra cost compared to extra performance. system spec ate 16 gig ram. Ryzen 7 5800 CPU. If it's not worth splashing out a minimum of £750 I can look at spending my money on something else..cheers

A 6900XT at £700 seems like the better option to me if buying new, you can however pick up a used 3080 for sub £500 and that would probably be what I'd do.

Can't argue with this, but it may be unnecessary depending on what you are hoping to hit performance wise - a 3070 is no slouch.

Definitely not worth doing, especially if going for a brand new AIB 3080, they're still horrendously overpriced and the retailers are laughing at you all the way to the bank.

If you positively have to upgrade, find the extra cash for the upcoming 4070Ti (which I think will be £800 (ish) for the FE cards) or wait for the inevitable price drop on the 7900XT.

That will give you at least 40-50% uplift in performance, rather than the 15-20% of a 3070 to 3080.

Hi. I can understand what you are saying and I have bought second had equipment before but at them prices it's a gamble isn't it buying second hand. You read some horror stories about it. Never thought of looking at the 6900 series .....thought they were not as powerful as the 3080 ...

Buy something else. It's really not worth it to upgrade to anything right now.

And what sort of games do you play? If they're similar to me, I can give you a ballpark performance figure based on my system.
I play mostly Arma 3 and I know that's mostly CPU power not GPU...squad...hell let loose and I've just bought **** loads on steam sale plus I'm looking at getting in to star citizen this year if this helps...cheers

Be worthwhile checking on YouTube to see how them games run on Nvidia Vs amd, generally they run better on Nvidia hardware.

Both CPU bottlenecked but I would say considering the 6900 XT can easily do 2400mhz that one in the video is very conservatively clocked.

Hi...so are you saying the 6900 is as good as the 3080 where Arma 3 is concerned?.
They are likely rather close, it's hard to know as ARMA 3 is very CPU bound anyway, if you crank the resolution neither card will let you down, if you want better RT and DLSS support the 3080 is better, the 6900 XT offers longer life span through more Vram for games that may hit Vram limits faster on a 3080, it is also worth getting as most come with 3 games bundled in too.

If you can get the 3080 cheaper though I think it is a solid choice.

I have a 5800x and 3070 with a 1440p 165hz monitor.

Honestly it runs everything just fine. (Wow, rdr2, warzone, pubg)

I was considering the 6900xt or 6950xt for £675 or £750 respectively.

I thought the best value was actually £675 6900xt AND buying 5800x3d (329)

But im silly and bought a 4080 for £1099 instead

Lol....if I had the money I would probably do the same...

I think snagging a 6900xt is a good move especially if you don’t care about rRT the 7900XT isn’t that big of a bump and it’s £900 anyway. 675 then pick up a 5800x3d for your cpu bound games once you save up.

Also don’t forget you can still fetch a good price for your used 3070….

The exact switch I did, I got 550 quid for my 3070 and got my 6900 for 650 from here. Happy days, hugely faster card in non RT.
