Hi everyone,

I am currently using an Overclockers built, "Titan Envy Duo DC", bought back in 2015. It came with:
  • Intel Core i7 4790K (Devil's Canyon) @ 4.6GHz Overclocked
  • Asus TUF Sabertooth Z97 Mark 2 Intel Z97 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard
  • GeForce GTX 970 OC Silent "Infin8 Black Edition"
  • Kingston HyperX 16GB (2x8GB) PC3-19200C11 2400MHz Dual Channel Kit
  • SuperFlower Leadex GOLD 1000W Fully Modular "80 Plus Gold" Power Supply
I replaced the GTX 970 with an EVGA 2070 a couple of years ago.

I currently use two 1920x1080 monitors, though only run games at 1080p on one of them. Even at that resolution I am finding that I have to switch lots of features off in newer games to get anything approaching acceptable frame rates, especially in msfs2020 and cyberpunk 2077.

I have a budget of about £2500 and am looking to reserve about £500 of that for a curved 3440x1440 ultrawide monitor (possibly the Cooler Master GM34-CWQ ARGB). Is it possible to get a new rig for the remaining £2k-ish that can drive that monitor at decent frame rates, especially msfs2020 which I have been struggling to run in an acceptable manner to date. If so, what spec would you recommend? I am guessing that there is probably not much mileage in upgrading my current rig as I expect almost all the current components would need replacing.

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give.

Thanks, dfour.

I notice you have specified an air cooler. Is that down to budget? Having said that, I had to replace the aio that was pre-fitted in my current rig about a year and half ago as it stopped cooling sufficiently leading to BSOD. I replaced it with a Noctua DH-15. How does that compare to the cooler you have specified and is it worth salvaging it for the new build?

Yes air cooling due to budget.
Agreed the DH15 is in a different league. Unfortunatly it wont fit in the case I specified as its a monster.

Both these will though:

The G500a has no fans included so you might need tto salvage some there or buy the more expensive model with fans.

I started playing around with putting components in and out of my basket and seeing what I could get for the budget I set. Can one of you have a look at this combo and compare and contrast it to the suggestions above? I am really intrigued to see how someone like myself who has been out-of-the-loop for years does when trying to select items by themselves :D. Also, is there any hope that my selections would be up to driving MSFS2020 at a decent fps on a 3440x1440 ultrawide monitor? I am sure that my selections are probably sub-optimal and would love some constructive criticism to help me learn.

If you get a Z690 motherboard you will need a board with bios flash button to update the bios for the 13600k to work otherw7se get a Z790.

Zotac offer a 5 year warranty on the cards if registered within 30 days otherwise 3 years.

Sn 770 m2 is better and faster.

Yes is the answer, my 3080 plays it fine @ 4K as you don't need 60fps... i do hit the VRAM limit though as it can use 11GB, again you are fine with 4070.

Thanks for the responses @mickyflinn and @turbot1984. I think I am getting closer. I modified my basket again based on your suggestions and also included the monitor I have been considering. Can anyone see any obvious flaws or have any further recommendations on this basket? I suspect that one issue is that the case and monitor are on pre-order. I guess it could be a while until they are back in stock.
I am quite pleased that this all comes closer than I expected to my overall budget of c. £2500.
Oh, one other question ... zotac also do an OC version of the 4070ti for an extra £30. The only difference I can see in the spec is a boost clock of 2625MHz vs 2610MHz. Is that likely to be noticeable in real world use and are there other benefits to the OC version?

Minimal i would have thought. + you can OC cheaper card anyway?
You don't need a 1000W psu ... 4070ti only has 320W power spikes (nice to see Nvidia have sorted this out!) so a 750/850W platinum unit would be my pick.
MSFS2020 is still a bit cpu limited below 4K and likes a lot of cores ... i do wonder how the 8 core 7700X stacks up against the 13600K? Bit more expensive though? Next months 7000X3D chips will be great no doubt but not cheap.
Other than that maybe a 240mm water cooler for £10 or so more, but not essential.
It's gonna absolutely fly compared to your old rig!

Hi @ShiWarrior you say to not buy a 4070. Any particular reason for that? I recognise that GPUs in general are overpriced at the moment but is there a specific reason not to buy it? It seems to meet my requirements for the best performance within my budget, especially if I want to make use of DLSS3 for MSFS2020. If not a 4070, which GPU do you recommend I select for this setup? I am always happy to consider alternatives ... I would rather buy the correct components now than have buyer's remorse in a month or so.
