3070 to 3080.... Is it worth it

I've had the fortunate event of owing a 3060 Ti, 3070, 3080 & 3090 - I play at 4k and the 3080 you could definitely tell the 3080 was a whole tier ahead of the 3070.. if I was playing lower than 4k however I'd imagine the 3070 would be more than enough

I bought ARMA 3 and gave it a whirl on my 5800X 6900 XT system in 5120x2880 (2560x1440 base res, scaled 200% in ARMA res increase, I was pretty badly CPU limited and was using a max of around 260 watts out of 320 capable.

The 6900 XT slays ARMA 3 but even a 5800X won't keep the game above 60 always, saw drops to 55. Draw distance and object distances have to be kept very reasonable whilst I can practically max every other GPU intensive slider, even FSAA.

Video.

Excuse my crap gameplay, never played ARMA, literally bought it to do a demonstration for you.

My GPU temps are reasonably warm, I run a very quiet fan profile and run the case fans louder, the fans on this model of 6900 XT are a bit annoying above 50%.

i liked the 6700XT I had before my 3070ti, the one and only reason I changed (nothing to do with performance) was the driver issue..

Intermittent grey screen and then would hard reboot, it happened in non-game scenarios, just basic tasks, and not often at all, but wasn't paying all that money to "put up" with these issues. Since back on NVIDIA, all is well..

Yeah I'd go for 4000 series or keep where you are.

3000 series are still very good. Unless you are vram limited and/or dont have gsync why bother?

90fps with gsync isn't that bad...getting an extra 30fps is largely irrelevant unless you are running 4k.

I'm keeping my 1440p for another few years I'll lower some settings if I need to.

Getting a 3080fe for £650 was a good buy.

Just a quick one. I'm not that up on these new cards but if I was to say get a 4070 ti would the power connectors be the same as the 3070 . Also I'm running a 750 w gold rated power supply Would this be powerful enough to run the 4070.?.. cheers

The problem with the 3070 is the 8gb vram. Otherwise it's a very good card

Just make sure its not a 10GB your upgrading to ;)

@TNA

Axe to grind gif please

Hey come on it's only fun we have on this section is teasing you and that 10GB card... the 4070ti is DOA at the current prices and the conversations there in that thread are really boring now and just the same repeating now. 4080 topic well even more dead than a 4070ti and 4090 is well no point talking about as it is best card this generation and had its pro balls cut off with no NVLINK and just a fancy gaming card or creator card for people that can manage with 24GB.

Nvidia and AMDs offerings are all very boring in some way or another this time for us enthusiasts that like the tech and I'm not one for software trickery like DLSS 3 FG joke, I didn't realise Nvidia was hiring ex TV engineers that use to work on soap opera effect to create a selling point that fakes FPS counters ..

Get use to it till Nvidia and AMD give us something to talk about so keep a lot of axes ready to grind.
