Hi all,

I'm looking for some help to spec out components for a new gaming PC Build alone, looking to spend around £1500 on the PC (no peripherals needed).

I play many different types of games, but hitting Tarkov again this year.

i like the smaller towers, but open to suggestions if it means more power.

Current Build looks like this:
  • GPU: ZOTAC GeForce GTX 1070 8gb Gddr5
  • SSD: Samsung 1 TB 860 EVO
  • SSD (2): Crucial MX300 525GB
  • MB: Gigabyte Z390 M Gaming Intel Z390 DDR4 Micro ATX Motherboard
  • RAM: Team Group Vulcan T-Force 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 PC4-24000C16 3000MHz Dual Channel Kit
  • CPU: Intel Core i7-9700K 3.6GHz
  • CPU Cooler: Arctic Freezer 33 Plus CPU Cooler - 120/120mm
  • PSU: Seasonic Focus Plus 550W 80 Plus Gold Modular Power Supply
Spec me :)

Happy New year and thanks in advance.

On mobile so not going to faff about with links etc.
AMD Ryzen 7700x
Applicable board.
2TB Gen 4 NVME (Keep your existing SSD's as additional storage)
New 850W+ Gold rated PSU of your choice
Card is a difficult choice, 7900 is too expensive. Maybe something like a 3080 FE second hand, around £500.

You should be able to get that in your budget.

I'd probably just put a new graphics card & PSU in your current system, for the best bang for buck upgrade.

Intel & NVIDIA build:

Lian Li Lancool 205 Midi-Tower Case - Black Window - £64.99
Phanteks AMP 750W 80 Plus Gold Modular Power Supply - £109.99
Akasa Alucia H4 Plus Premium CPU Cooler - £38.96

Intel Core i5-12400F 2.50GHz (Alder Lake) Socket LGA1700 Processor - Retail - £179.98
Asus Prime H610M-A D4 - Intel H610 DDR4 Micro ATX Motherboard - £99.95
Team Group Vulcan Z T-Force 32GB (2x16GB) DDR4 PC4-25600C16 3200MHz Dual Channel Kit - Grey - £79.99
MSI GeForce RTX 3070 Gaming Z Trio LHR 8GB GDDR6 PCI-Express Graphics Card - £569.99

WD Blue SN570 2TB SSD NVME M.2 2280 PCIe Gen3 Solid State Drive (WDS200T3B0C) - £139.99

Grand Total: £1,297.04

AMD & AMD build:

My AM5 build is probably not the best use of the money if you're only gaming, you'd get better performance from dropping down to a 7600X, a cheaper cooler (like the Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE, it it fits) and choosing a beefier graphics card.

Lian Li Lancool 205 Midi-Tower Case - Black Window - £64.99
Phanteks AMP 750W 80 Plus Gold Modular Power Supply - £109.99
EK Water Blocks EK-AIO 280 D-RGB All In One CPU Water Cooler - 280mm - £119.99
EK Water Blocks EK-AIO LGA1700 upgrade kit - £0.00

AMD Ryzen 7 7700X Eight Core 5.40GHz (Socket AM5) Processor - Retail - £398.99
Asus Prime B650-Plus (Socket AM5) DDR5 ATX Motherboard - £209.99
TeamGroup Vulcan 32GB (2X16GB) DDR5 PC5-44800C36 5600MHz Dual Channel Kit - Black (FLBD532G5600HC36BDC01) - £139.99
Sapphire Radeon RX 6700 Pulse Gaming OC 10GB GDDR6 PCI-Express Graphics Card - £338.99
AMD Radeon™ Raise The Game Bundle - Dead Island 2 & The Callisto Project - £0.00

WD Blue SN570 2TB SSD NVME M.2 2280 PCIe Gen3 Solid State Drive (WDS200T3B0C) - £139.99

Grand Total: £1,536.12

If you can hold on until mid-January there are more CPUs & boards coming out which may give you better options.

AM5 build as Tetras suggested. Micro-Atx as you said you like smaller cases.

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £1,468.93 (includes delivery: £0.00)

Reuse your old drives to save money.
You could use the Artic freezer cooler (good cooler) or the better thermalright peerless assassin for the same money but OC dont sell it. Come on Overclockers buy this cooler. You used to stock Thermalright!!

Thank you for the input guys.

if need be i can spend a little more, it is purely gaming. so i would like to get the best bang for for my money.

happy to go to up to around £1800 if that gets me the better card.

Thanks

Funnily enough, of the graphics cards I suggested (a 6700 non-XT or 3070) I consider them both a decent upgrade, but I'm not happy with suggesting you 'upgrade' to a 12400. It IS faster, but you're dropping two cores and stepping down to an i5, which doesn't sit well with me. Unless you need the upgrade for a hand-me-down, then I wouldn't do it.

Going with a 7700X, on the other hand, you're gaining in more ways (same number of cores, but double the threads, newer platform, newer memory, future upgrade potential, decent clocks). I do still suspect though, the most meaningful difference would be dumping the budget on a 4080 + PSU, or 4090 + PSU.

Revised build for the new budget, I followed dfour's lead, dropped the SSD & substituted some cheaper parts, to fit the best graphics card I could.

AMD Ryzen 5 7600X Six Core 5.30GHz (Socket AM5) Processor - Retail - £299.99
Asrock B650M PG Riptide (Socket AM5) DDR5 Micro-ATX Motherboard - £179.99
TeamGroup Vulcan 32GB (2X16GB) DDR5 PC5-44800C36 5600MHz Dual Channel Kit - Black (FLBD532G5600HC36BDC01) - £139.99

Powercolor Radeon RX 7900 XT HellHound 20GB GDDR6 PCI-Express Graphics Card - £929.99

Lian Li Lancool 205 Midi-Tower Case - Black Window - £64.99
Phanteks AMP 1000W 80 Plus Gold Modular Power Supply - £149.99

Grand Total: £1,778.14

& this cheaper cooler not available from OCUK, if it fits (review).

what Hard drive would you suggest additionally, i want to give away my old pc and need a bigger one anyway.

Cheers

You won't need a heatsink for an ssd I don't believe. I've been using mine without one for about 5 years with no issues.

HI all,

i bought all the above and its has arrived today, I'm just building now.

but have a question regarding the SSD and MB, the MB doesn't do i need a heat sink for the SSD, neither packaging containing one - i just wanted to check.

@Tetras @dfour @MissChief

Thanks
Sorry replied to the wrong person above. You don’t absolutely need one, as long as your case has good airflow then you’ll be fine.
