Hi guys,

Just wondering if I could get some advice on building up a new PC from overlockers website.

One like this

I think I'll set my budget on or around £3k. I'm not sure what the ideal graphics card for good gaming and fps will be but I know the 4090 is damn expensive! I was looking at the 4080 but I don't know if the reviews are all that great or even what CPU will fit best with it.. SO I'm wondering what you guys could possibly make up and let me have a look at? Do motherboards make much of a difference in terms of FPS?

Thanks!

What resolution are you planning to game at?

Yes and No. A good motherboard with good power delivery may allow the chip to boost higher than a cheaper motherboard but in general motherboards make no difference to FPS. Its more about features and options.

Part of the reason the 4090 was better received than the 4080 is that even though it's extremely expensive, it is a decent generational leap and can genuinely do things (in terms of settings, resolutions and running RT) that no other card on the market is capable of doing. The 4080 still has a ginormous price tag, but it's not exceptional like the 4090 is. That said, it's not possible (or at least, it is not easy) to judge the value of a graphics card in a pre-build in the same way as retail cards, because the prices are different and inclusive of a whole system.

Do you do anything except games?

1440p regular not ultra wide.

What is white tax? lol

if I did decide to get a 4090 would there be a bottle neck with this set up? Except maybe justg the 1440p monitor lol

White tax is the fact that white components are generally more expensive than black ones. If you go all white over an entire build you will end up paying around 100 pounds more in the end. There are times when it works the other way around as well and there can be a deal on a white psu or AIO that makes it cheaper but that is the excpetion not the rule and in general the black components are cheaper.

The 4090 will be slightly bottlenecked at 1440p , you will only have an average of 300fps and not 350fps. GPU bottlenecks are perfectly OK, do not worry about it too much. As time goes on the newer games stress gpus more than the same generation of cpus and the bottleneck will disappear in future titles. 4090 is massively expensive but it is the undoubted best gpu...for now, for 1440p it is not really needed and you can easily save £1k and upgrade to a newer gpu with that cash in 2-3 years time.

I appreciate everyones input. I was having a look at the 'Custom gaming PC' option and I chucked in some stuff if any of you guys can look it over and tell me if it's gonna all work out smoothly and if there's anything I don't actually need.
I just want to run games with 100+ fps on my 1440p monitor.

Build

I seen the 7900 XTX and I'm not sure if it's much better than the regular 7900 XT or just keep the XTX for the extra £100.. I could future proof myself for a few years..Maybe.

13900K > I'd get the 13700K instead - £225. Not enough difference in games for the 13900K to be worth it.
Motherboard > unless you need the features on the Z790-A (haven't checked), I'd downgrade to the Z790-P £78 if you don't need wifi, which is a big saving).
Swap the SA510 for a second SN770, no point having a dinosaur (or the cable clutter) in your build. I don't think it'll cost you anything, maybe a pound or two.
OS: there are cheaper ways of dealing with this, like re-using an old Windows 7 or 10 key, but I will say no more.
Graphics: I'd avoid a generic 7900 XTX, I don't know what OCUK are going to pull out of their build stock, but MBA models don't look very hot right now (or rather, they look way too hot :o ), so I'd select an AIB custom card like the Pulse.

In general the XTX is approx 17% faster than the XT so it is worth the extra £100 ....but there are issues with the coolers on the reference AMD cards so I would say avoid this version for the forseeable future and you want to get an AIB partner card with their own different design coolers and not an AMD MBA version, the AIB cards are generally more expensive so it is difficult do advise without actual prices.

On that configurator the Asrock 6900xt is significantly cheaper than an XT and will give 100fps @1440p in almost all games when RT is not enabled. I would say this is a good option.

If you look at all the XTX versions available such as this one-

This is just a ref AMD card that has been put into an Asrock box. These cards are to be avoided at the moment due to upto 20% of them having issues. If you want an XTX then look for a partner card such as the one below imho -

The i9 13900kf is just a waste of money. It a halo product just to have the bestest cpu. You get almost the same performance for the much cheaper i7 13700kf saving £225.

I also wouldnt buy a made by amd (MBA) 7900xtx due to the fault with some of the cooling systems. Buy a card from a different company with there own cooler on it like the Asrock Radeon RX 7900 XTX Gaming 24GB GDDR6 PCI-Express Graphics Card for £100 more.

I would also swap the case to the G500A as it has much better air flow than the 600s

Awesome!

What would the ideal case be out of those options? I have changed to the G500A.

updated build

Price has dropped like £400 while upgrading the graphics card lol.. I don't really need a second hard drive either to be honest I'd never really fill up a 2TB by just playing games anyway.

You're right about the OS though I can just use my current windows 10 I don't really need windows 11.

If you are going for a 13700 , or any Intel cpu with P and E cores , you will want to use Windows 11. Windows 10 thread scheduler is not designed to recoginize he difference whereas Windows 11 has a fancy new smart thread scheduler and you should be looking to upgrade to win11 for use with a Raptorlake cpu. How you source a key is upto you.

Looked again and the asrock gaming is just a stock MBA card with the work gaming attached so its one to avoid. :(

I would advise speaking to OCUK directly and get them to add this card as they have it in stock.

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £1,289.99 (includes delivery: £0.00)

Drop the windows 11 option as well. Saves £127!!
Oh that's a bummer. Is it almost better to just get a 4080 then if the prices are getting pushed in to that range? Or is the 7900 XTX punching better than the 4080?

If you are brand agnostic then the 4080 is a better product at the same price. 4080 and 7900xtx is very similar performance but the 4080 does have superior RT performance and it also achieves similar performance whilst using less power which is also good.

Reasons not to get a 4080. Size of the card..but if you are getting an AIB 7900xtx then they are equally as large so not a valid reason. Power connector, its just in an odd position and messes up clearances with a lot of cases , you need a very very wide case to actually get these card to fit well. Wierd shape PCB, only relevant is you are planning to watercool and do not like the dimensions of the product, I may be the only person with this objection but for me it is a big deal.
