AMD Radeon MBA 7900 XTX Junction Temp issue workaround

This problem won't be holding me back one second from buying used. I might even get a cheap card soon when the masses try to flog their stuff on the used market because they don't want to deal with the RMA process.. Gonna be laughing all the way to the bank, I'm sorry not sorry . That said, stuff like this shouldn't happen to the extend that it seems it has. But I rather take a defective cooler at a 20% chance, with the worst end result being throttling, which i can do something about, than any other sort of failure at any % that could cause fire, shorts or other dangerous things. In the end it all comes down to price and the market is still to pricey, even if there were no problems at all.

Thank you @Freddie1980 as this was the exact problem I was having with mine and I sent it back as it would be fine until the system was shutoff after a while and when powered on again Windows would say the driver has encountered an issue and the system has to be restarted. On system restart it would blank screen completely sometimes even on the bios startup.

After a few more attempts the computer would start again with the Intel IGPU attacted and the drivers would have to be reinstalled and the card would work until the computer was shut down and it would repeat itself with the same issue. If I never turned the system off ever again the card would've been fine but I also got this bizarre issue with the audio over HDMI cutting out for a second while listening to music and switching tabs in firefox. HDMI audio with Intel IGPU completly fine.

I tested my card: Sapphire 7900 XTX

I tried Stock Settings for about 10 Minutes or so on 3D Mark, Junction temperatures got to about 89C.

I got bored of waiting so I increased the power limit (all other settings stock) and the Junction Temperature within a minute it went to 110C

I turned the Power limit back default and the Junction Temperature reduced to 100C~ (Although it is climbing again very slowly)

I am unsure if this would this be considered faulty or not since I tested increased power limit.

For NOW, It's not impacting my work so I would love to know what I should do/Options are available to futureproofing myself/card

Depends, if the card is still pulling max TDP and the fans are at low rpm then you are getting max performance and it doesn't matter. If it's throttling performance (you'll see power draw and voltage go down) and fan rpm ramping up then you have an issue

Computerbase.de says recall is already in progress and suppliers are pulling affected batches

"ComputerBase now has several verified statements from wholesalers stating that there are several affected batches of MBA designs of the Radeon RX 7900 XTX. In the meantime, several wholesalers are taking back graphics cards from affected batches that have already been delivered to shops.

AMD and Sapphire have already promised us an exchange of our MBA designs we sold (+-200 cards). As far as I have heard, 5 batches are affected and AMD has started a partial recall of the MBA designs. AMD will make a statement soon"

its still under warranty so see how it goes come summer or if amd do a blanket recall and replace for any card having the issue then get it replaced

I'm seeing 110 degree junction temps on my Sapphire MBA card. Very concerned, as it's winter right now and ambient temperatures are much lower than they'll be in even just a few months.

I should have gone NVidia :/

temp will still be 110c in middle of summer, you'll just get less performance as voltage drops to reduce heat output

RMA the card. For £1k+ you should not accept a faulty product.

AMD has today released a statement regarding reports of thermal throttling issues on their MBA (Made By AMD) Radeon RX 7900 XTX graphics cards, with AMD confirming that a "limited number of graphics cards" are impacted.

Companies always cavet bad news like this and it's wrong. In all likelihood there will be lots people out their using 7900XTX's with this issue but because their not an enthusiasts they don't monitor temps and core clocks and are oblivious to the lose in performance.

there is always a limited amount because the cards are not infinite so they can apply it to all stock and limited is still true :P
