Age old question question Petrol or Diesel

To be honest if you don't actually dislike diesel then there isn't much wrong with the cars in your list. I don't particularly like diesels but I've really enjoyed the 530d, it's a great car and the engine really suits it.
It’s certainly up there in my list, I did go look at a 640d at the weekend and the interior was in poor condition for the age of the car it was all scuffed and marked.

The 6 Series is clearly the better car - it is, after all, a 5 Series that has been made more luxurious.

But the problem with them is, as you are finding, that for any set budget the quality of a used 5 Series will likely be far better than a 6 Series - they are just more expensive cars and always have been which means if you do find one the same price as a similar 5 Series there will likely be a reason.

I wanted one but found the same thing.

Whilst obviously I'll say this, I don't think there is a better car for your budget in your list than the 5 Series. The E Class of the generation you'll likely find simply isn't as good a car (The later model is, better in many respects, but unlikely to be under £15k for a nice one) and neither is the Jaguar XF.

The BMW x30d engines are fantastic (both 530d and 640d are great). So are the Mercedes E350CDI engines (OM642). You can't go wrong with either. I think the BMW's feel much more modern inside though, with much better infotainment.

For the type of car you're looking at, I'd be looking at a diesel engine (almost vomited when i said that) - they are effortlessly wafty, get up to speed without any drama, the 6cyl don't sound bad at all, return good MPG and are so smooth to drive. I'd find it hard to recommend any sort of petrol over these two diesel cars.

Been looking at Lexus for petrol cars but then they are slightly older, as they have shifted to hybrids. So I started looking some JDM cars, again slight older but would most likely been good condition. The Crowns that I have taking a liking to have NA 3.5L V6.

My only concern with a diesel for low milage would be doff issues, although not sure if that gets blown out of proportion.
My current 144k mile diesel, hasn’t suffered from any DPF issues. But is now suffering from age, wear and tear items are all starting build up due to mileage. So I wouldn’t be to bothered with another diesel.

The main problem is how little 15K gets you. Even the ropiest new generation 5 series is 15k and that is for a 6 year old car!

15K is more 10 year old 5 series car territory with a decent spec and mileage.

Yep you’re tight, these days 15k is around a 10 year old car, in this class anyway. The other day I found a Mercedes E class E350cdi estate, ex demo car with over 100k miles for 13k. Years ago I wouldn’t have even considered dropping that kind of money on a car with that kind of mileage. But it seems to be the market at the minute.

I am in a similar position. I want a replacement for my Lexus GS450h but most about have higher mileage than my current 2006 or are the Executive model so a few of the nice toys are missing (Mark Levinson and Upgraded larger screen/updated nav) I have also been looking at GS300h as well but similar story. I found a mint GS300h Luxury with ML and upgraded nav with 25K but that was at £20.5K but dropped now to £19.5k.

I was looking at BMW and have seen a few in my price range (About £15K Plus my car or £17.5K Outright) but some were a bit questionable or didnt have HK Audio etc. That was 535i though Currently a white Luxury on AT with 35K for £17k, i have seen some good deals on 435i around your price with about 70-80k if you can deal with 2 door although a fair few are convertible which i cant stand.

I have put a purchase on hold for a couple of months with the hopes the weather gets better and not such a pain to travel to look at cars and maybe the market will drop a bit.

EDIT: BTW i only do 7 miles to work and back daily so diesel isnt really an option for me.

I am hoping that the market would drop a bit before I buy, but I am sure it won’t. 2 doors I could deal with it, my previous car before my current one was a 6 series coupe. But I do have kids and having 4 doors just makes life easier.

I think there will be a drop but its just however long you are willing to wait and sods law, you go out and buy something new and a month later its come crashing down.

Something like this should sort you.

Bit over your budget but should be room to haggle. Low mileage, looks tidy.. I dont know why it says 178bhp in the description maybe that without the Hybrid motors but the car is about 220 and decently punchy but certainly not fast. Will do 50mpg all day every day.

I can't see that diesel makes any sense right now with the price difference between petrol and diesel wiping out any MPG gains in diesel's favour. Currently diesel is 25p per litre more expensive here than petrol and I imagine it's similar across the rest of the country.

Because it doesn't matter how much sense it makes when the used cars you're looking at were new cars when everyone wanted a diesel and are therefore all diesel.

In 2030 buying a used car of this type will give you lots of petrol options.

That first one, is very nice just out of budget, only just.

100% agree with that statement.

It depends on miles driven imo, 144k is high yearly milage if you car is 10 years old or less (not sure if I've missed the details of your current car). I've just read a few too many horror stories about dpfs, and I'm sure I read diesel is going to shoot up (something about russia).

My car is 12 years old and I have put on 44k in 3 years and 9 months. Would have been more, like many I got furloughed and didn’t have to drive many miles for about three months. I know what you mean, there are many horror stories about DPF’s failing. These are usually caused by diesel cars being driven around town and not getting up to temperature.

With my commute my car is up to temp, by the time approaching the major A road. Is then driven at a sustained speed of 70mph for 10 miles and the return journey. Then once a week I drive longer route that is 20 miles at 70mph. This has been fine and I haven’t had any issues with my DPF and there is no history of it in the paper work.

Regarding diesel going up again, this is a bit of a concern and one of the reasons I have wanted to go back to petrol or even Hybrid.
