Hi,
Recently I was quoted £50k for a kitchen from Wrens which was the reduced to £28k from the removal of installation and the current January offers. How much wiggle room is there generally from negotiating prices at Wrens? Is this massively over price even with their offers?
Thanks!

We just had a quote from them. Started at £38k. Down to £31k with me fitting myself. After Jan offers, £17k. DIY Kitchens for same or better and appliances from Appliances Direct was just under £12k. Have asked them to price match but they are being slow on it. Their "sales" are not really sales as their units are expensive. Eg. Standard 300mm wall unit from DIY Kitchens with gloss 22mm door - £77. Wren - £400 discounted to £195.

Be firm on what you want and let us know how you get on. You can literally send the Wren quote to DIY Kitchens and they will build a comparable quote for you.

That's a joke unless you're filling a 100sqm room.

Get more quotes. As Shadowman has said, send your Wren quote and plan to DIY and get a price from them. You can even see unit prices individually on the DIY kitchens website.

Wren are a rip off anyway. Price should be the price, not double glazing style where they start silly and cut it down "bcos offerz".

We had a large German kitchen at our last house with top spec units and high price group doors. Even with that the units came to £12-14k.

We had a very successful experience a few years ago from better kitchens. Got a design from Wickes and got BK to price up the same units. They also do handleless.

We've put a deposit down from wren last year. actual price was over £35k for high end everything including quartz counter tops (over 8m of it needed). With the discounts and everything else we needed we got the price to just under £17k. Comparing that to Howdens, Benchmarx and others it is VERY competitive and they have exactly the styles and colours we wanted. Some friends have had some good experiences from our the Tunbridge Wells area.

Yep, my experience of Wren is OK quality but that notch up price wise making them not amazing VFM.

DIY kitchens had far better quality options, real wood etc, and they partner with natural stone surfaces with a healthy discount for worktops.. we got the kitchen and utility (including a higher quality real wood option) for the same price as Wren wanted for just the kitchen.

Just use the DIY kitchens online planner, do the same layout and see what the ist difference is.

Adding a couple of points from my recent experience as we're currently planning a large kitchen (20+ units) for our renovation.
  • DIY kitchens informed us they'll price match like for like with DIY, Howdens, B&Q etc.
  • Our quote from Wren is about £10k for units, DIY is around £7.5k
  • DIY kitchens dont appear to be any better quality than Wren (we went to the DIY showroom in Yorkshire to have a proper look). Only the door frames are solid wood, the centre panel is veneered MDF or similar and the cabinets are also the same material.
  • Wren appear to have a few more options when it comes to configuration. e.g. they do a 1000mm wide larder unit, whereas DIY would have to be 2 x 500mm units.
We're still in early planning stages but it's currently a toss up between DIY and Wren for us.

Ultimately you need to go with what fits your budget, style, and compromises you're willing to make on the design and options. DIY, Howdens etc... are all reasonable quality, unless you go for a bespoke specialist designer/installer, which will likely be significantly more expensive.

I realise you’re asking about DIY kitchens but Better kitchens were fully assembled, 18mm solid wood carcass.

Full disclosure: I don’t work for better kitchens, was just very happy with what we got, at a fraction of the price of Wickes or Homebase.

I have a Wren kitchen, 50K is taking the ****. I would have blown up in the show room with sheer audible disgust (enough for the manager to think WTF) - either they want your custom or they don't. The 50K quote is a load of tosh to make you think you're getting a saving. That 28K quote seems more inline with Wren's pricing on a normal kitchen. It's the old Mega-high quote to justify the higher than everywhere else quote to make it seem like good value hasn't died yet..

Also check through the bill of materials .. they probably double charged you for two kitchens.

BEFORE YOU SIGN ANYTHING - treble check the entire BOM against the plan, every door, shelf, work top length, direction of the components, fittings and even the colour. We had three different colours doors at one point and we ended up going through the BOM and the design with the designed three times before (and even got locked into the showroom) it got signed.

Looking at kitchens myself and better kitchens look very competitive. Which range did you go for?

Solid wood, I highly doubt that. They will be chipboard like everyone else.

Their site says solid 18mm sides, not solid wood. Their video showing some manufacturing also clearly shows veneered chipboard.

I do like their site though. Going to have a good look over it tomorrow and compare their prices and styles to something like DIY Kitchens. Hopefully they have a good selection of funkier units like some of the better German brands.
