More pay or less hrs? what would motivate you more?

To add. I don't really notice the extra between 40k something and 50k something.

Not? I'm at 63K EUR last year, and still lack enough money to do what I want.

I have to skimp on holidays (only go 6x per year but keep it in the cheap AirBnB, hostels, etc...), the house I live in (I rent because morgage is impossible for similar house) and I still don't have a nice motorbike or a nice car like a GTR :).
Still can't really afford household help etc, because who likes cleaning/organizing/laundry...

Even if it'd earn a tenfold I still wouldn't be able to fully live like I want to!

Its fine really. I don't want a bigger house. Just means more tat gets bought, more work to maintain etc.
I have enough for bills, to save and to not worry, the jobs (perm) come with more hassle.

To feel materially richer I think I'd have to earn 100k.

What's 20k going to do? Save a bit more? Go to waitrose rather than tesco.

I go on my two expensive (for me) holidays and a couple of mini breaks and that's holiday gone.

I'd have to earn so so much more to make a difference that its not going to happen. But time? I'd notice a day off a week instantly

Id reduce hours as long as it meant at least 1 full extra day off per week.

I'm fortunate that me and my wife still live a lifestyle that we could afford when our household income was ~£40k less. We made a conscious effort to do so, so that we could tip the work / life balance in favour of life at a much earlier age.

For now (at 33) working full time doesn't feel like much of a burden. Plus having a child in school means I still have to worry about childcare if I had an extra day off.

One place I worked changed the working day from 5.30pm finish to 5pm instead of a payrise, but left the targets and workload the same so basically expected us to work harder for the same money to leave earlier. It could have been fine but the industrial estate we worked on was gridlocked from 5-5.30pm so it had no benefit but to sit in traffic.

I'd rather be paid more for the hours, then I can spend more on the time off I get, but that's probably because I only have one holiday a year now.

Good value if you earn more than £1500 a month (based on 4 weeks per month). Don't worry yourself with being in the minority nor being unambitious. There can be destructive downsides to ambition.
This is such a fabulous post.

*edit* I'll expand a little. I'm fiercely ambitious in my career - I don't want to just turn up to work, I want to be towards the top (although my ambitions don't stretch to C-level, if I get to that point I'd rather start my own consultancy) and push the standards of the whole company forwards whilst I'm there. However, it's a very stressful way to live. Constantly questioning everything around you, your mind going in a million different directions, getting frustrated when you don't see the same standards being applied across the business, the higher-ups not really "getting" it which then makes the whole thing worse. It's served me well in terms of salary but I've suffered mentally because of it - I wish I wasn't like this.

I'd definitely take a shorter working week for a pro-rata cut. I've got some pretty humongous bills to pay off in the next couple of years, but once those are out of the way I'll be asking for the same. Work Mon-Thurs and have Friday off.

I've casually started sowing the seed of going to a 4 day week in work for everyone.. We leave early on Fridays, so effectively if we did 8AM-6PM Mon-Thus, or 8AM-5:30PM with only 30 mins lunch, we could have fridays off without losing pay or productivity...

The senior management really mulled it over, I think they'd like to do it.. I canvassed staff and surprisingly didn't have the unanimous response I thought, some people want to be in work 5 days a week..

Agreed. I recently got a new role for more money etc, but if I'm honest i am not seeing the extra money as any sort of compensation for the extra stress/mindshare that goes into it. I mean rampant inflation has soured the deal somewhat as well, but even without, it isnt enough of an increase to have made any significant change in my quality of life.

If someone offered me more money for 5 days or the same amount I'm on now for 4, I'd absolutely choose the latter. Time is literally invaluable and I'm a serial hobbyist.

I understand that, the more responsible the function, the more of a headache and more **** you have to deal with.

But, going from 50 to 100k is not really possible in one step, small (and hopefully frequent) increments is usually the way to go!

Im 28, working 9-6 most days, sometimes it can be 9-11, sometimes even 9am-4am, no joke.. I'm on almost 80k but I would prefer to work less, Fridays off and 60k a year and I'd be happy.

At the moment I would take a pay rise as I live alone, no kids etc. I try to do as much overtime as I can, most I ever did was 85hrs over 4 weeks during peak COVID. Usually aim for 15-20hrs. Nearly 50% goes straight to tax man though.

I'm sure when I have a family and kids etc then it will be the opposite, will much prefer less hours.

I have to work 1 in 3 weekends (which is a doddle except for early start late finish because of reduced commuter service at weekend) but id happily drop that for a slight pay cut.
We also work any bank holidays that fall on your rota no questions. That means Christmas NYE too. To be honest i dont even mind that lol.
My jobs Stress free, enjoyable and i work with some amusing people too.

That would make you unemployed! :p

Hehehe.

Tomorrow we have a work thing in reading but as I have to travel down I basically said I was taking the entire day off, so drive a few hours, then free bar, party, food, hotel expenses paid and back Saturday.

To be honest I reckon my free entire afternoons are going to change with this new role, but I'm sure I'll manage to get a few rounds of PUBG in a day. We'll see....

I can't imagine the normal type of 100k job would be worth it for my personality. Only way I could achieve that is by working for myself.
No way I'll get to that as a perm

Totally depends on the person and their situation.

For me... I work a standard work week, so more pay would be more of a motivator... because I want to buy myself a sports car lol.

I do two days on low pay and my wife is retired, I would literally be a millionaire if I earned 63k.
We still go on holidays roughly every other month, Lanzarote in Feb, a few days in Liverpool in March, Menorca in May and she's just booking abroad for July and a few days in this country for August.
I have no idea what people spend their money on.

My manager is on around £80,000 and her husband earns the same.
She needs a £1000 job doing on her car and can't afford it.
