Hi all. I would like to know if someone could help me understand if I am being ripped off.

I have received a quote of £670 for a repair. I believe that when I spoke with this gentleman on the phone he said something housing. I definitely heard housing. So went out and looked it up and what I found was thermostat housing. It's got a crack. Car is Ford Mondeo from 2016.

The question I have is:
1) Is £670 to repair this a realistic price? Has anyone had this done in the past?
2) Would it be better to have it done at the Ford? Maybe it is more expensive?
3) They said they would source it from eurocar parts. It has 2y of warranty. Is a part sourced from eurocar parts reliable?

Look forward to hearing your opinions. TiA.

Hey mate,

kinda gonna need a bit more info to go on

ECP supply many different parts from many different brands.
What part of the quote what labour, what was parts?

1) unknown
2)maybe?
3) as above

Way more info needed tbh.

2016 means it's a mk5. But to get an accurate price we'd need to know the engine.

Assuming it is the thermostat housing then they go for about £175-£200, maybe slightly more as the 3 places I tried online had no stock. According to ECP they don't do the housing, just the thermostat itself (which is about 50 quid)

I wouldn't think that it'd take more that 3 hours, being over generous, typically Ford don't make them difficult to access because thermostats are a common failure point

Of course this is to be taken with a large pinch of salt given the lack of information

Apologies for the lack of information. The engine is 2L, 180HP TDCI.
I hope this is the piece of information that was missing.

I can't remember if they said thermostat too. I do know he definitely said housing because I don't understand anything about car, went online and searched for that keyword, and that's what came up. I was with my toddler so loads of noise and then ran out of battery! (I know, looks like a movie!).

When I rang the breakdown, they sent someone first and he was looking at the right-hand side of the engine (facing the car from front) and he showed me and there was this thing of plastic black, but couldn't tell if it was attached to the car or not. Couldn't also tell if it was from there because there was water everywhere.

What I am afraid of is they might be overcharging because got no way to drive the car £670 seems excessive, but might be the price everywhere.

Ideally you need to call back and find out what they're actually doing, once you know then you can call a couple of other places and see what they'd charge.

Sounds like alternator to me if it ran out of battery. I would be a bit dubious but it could be lack of information from you.

aye daughters galaxy 2015/16 same part from ford £212. crazy prices but is what it is. 2.0 diesel same engine in common with peugeot lol

Spoke with them apparently it is the thermostat housing and the thermostat - comes as a kit and price is around £550.

you can get a used one yourself and ask a garage to fit it for you but you have to know the exact part number, what i do is go to my local dealership and ask on the parts counter to look up the exact part number I need.
Then i find a used one on ebay.

It looks like that part can be had used for around £150 or something like that

Most garages aren't keen on fitting customer sourced parts for plenty of obvious reasons.

not sure but when you get the part number try the bay 154338596169 may be the one seems to cover a fair few variants with a factory part number as well.
550 seems a hell of a lot for the item,

several independent garages have done it for me in the past, they put "customer supplied part" on the invoice

a dealership would never do it

Yep, most indies are OK with it. Always just claim its the part if something goes wrong that way too.

If that's the price of the part then an hour or hour and a halves labour for £120 doesn't sound totally unreasonable.
