New front door or restore it?

Great timing I know but house is getting shifted this year(Q1). Doors got a bit tatty over the years, lock can be sticky turning the key, handles scuffed up and its drafty. Weighing up if I should spruce up the old lad (painter+locksmith) or pony up for a new one.

Last I checked few months back looking at 1500 to 2000 fitted for a new composite door.
I have no idea what a restore will look and "feel" like so struggling to weigh up a new door first impression to buyers.

Anyone restored a front door and wish they bought a new one? Do the prices look about right? If you were buying would you give a hoot if it looked new vs freshened up?

Depends what sort of door you have. If a slightly dated looking old uPVC one, then deffo go for a new one.

We replaced ours recently with a Solidor composite for £1700 fully specced and fitted.

Looks great, don't regret it at all.

How bad actually is it? Mine was ropey at best but it didn't scream deal breaker. I was close to replacing it but didn't, thankfully - as I wouldn't have made the £1700 back.

Are you selling the house?

If so, assuming it's relatively presentable, fit a new handle and lock yourself if necessary and leave it at that.

I doubt you'd add the cost of the door to the value of the house. No sensible buyer will be put off because the door has a scratch or two, unless it's so bad that it makes them question the maintenance of the house in general.

I did this with my old wooden front door.

To be fair fitting the glass and 70 quid handle did end up near abouts £1k

The only issue I have with the above one is that I fillered the joint where presumably the wood is tennoned in /connected and it has since all cracked again similar to previous. Presumably not fixed /tied very well.

I just painted my internal one and got a carpenter to put new hinges on it. I posted about it here
