Which upgrade next?

Hi folks,
You know when you like building PC's and haven't upgraded for three years and start getting the itch:cry:

So I am mainly a sim racer, but also things like Far Cry 6, Red Dead Redemption, so all round gaming PC is the need.

I run triple screens at 144hz and am just noticing that I can't run newer titles with all the eye candy on. Indeed titles like iRacing I need to turn down a fair bit in busier races/high FPS tracks.

My rig has a Intel Core i7 4790K and an 8GB RTX2070 Super. Know that the Processor is/was highly rated but is obviously long in the tooth now, and the GFX is also good but many iterations since.

So I am wondering if one or the other is the best upgrade and which would it be?

Or do I go whole hog and replace both elements (in time! given the prices at the moment)

Unfortunatly as it would be better to upgrade it all. It all depends on how much your budget is.

am5 7700
32 gig ddr5
rtx 4080

Lots of money but should be able to push all the pixels you need especially if you use DLS 3.

The dirty upgrade would be the gpu and just ignore any bottleneck until you can afford to upgrade the cpu.

The AMD 7000 series X3D chips will be out soon and because you are in a position to wait you really should wait to see what sort of performance these give. In certain titles the 5800X3d chip was 30% faster than anything else available and one of those titles where it had a significant advantage was iRacing. This type of performance advantage is likely to be replicated with the newer 7000 X3D cards as well imho , is obvious that certain parts of the engine (physics calculations most likely) are run solely in the cache so the huge vcache for the X3D cpus is massively beneficial.

GPU prices are likely to drop over the next few months and the shouts for the 4080/4070ti are sensible choices. AMD 7900xt/xtx has some wierd behaviour in some racing titles and the Nv cards are more consistent.

See my GFX card is still selling at £300-£400 on EBay so the upgrade there and sell the old one would cushion the blow.
Then the Mobo upgrade for the new CPU I guess.

Yeah, good call by Haz on X3D chip ... fairly pricey though i would guess, but out in a couple of weeks.
If you reckon old gpu goes for that, 3070FE's go for 350 quid in MM .... 40% faster than your gpu, now thats a cheap upgrade if your psu is up to it?

Crikey! I nearly bought one new for £430, but waited for 3080, prices are still on the high side for sure.
 
4000 series nvidia cards with dlss 3 and frame insertion is meant to be good for sim racing/flight sim etc, where utmost reaction not as critical, but extra frames make for a much smoother experience
