Ah how come? I thought every country has a dialling code. When I was in Germany back in 2016, I called my parents to say I arrived at my destination ok and made sure to use +44.

If you're dialling from a different nationally registered phone to the one you're trying to contact you do. He's calling a UK number from the UK so all is golden.

as dis said, if the UK sim is in spain your uk provider needs to be allowing you to use you phone abroad via a foreign phone provider, before calls to the regular UK number would get put through
