Hello.

I am looking for some advice / opinions on the upgrade path for my system. I only really play Fallout 76, Fallout 4 and NFS games (Will be getting Unbound) at 1080p 60hz.
I can't decide to go Core i3 12100f with a pcie 4.0 mobo or ryzen 5600 equivalent or change the GPU for a 6700 xt. I have a budget of about £450.

My system specs are:
I5 4670k @ 4.2
Cooler master Hyper 22 Black Edition
16gb Kingston Hyper x 1600 ram
Gigabyte G1 Sniper matx motherboard
Pallit Nvidia GTX 1660 mini @1930 boost
Kolink Bronze 600w PSU
Silverstone TJ08b-e case
240gb SATA 3 SSD.
I will be keeping the case as I love it and it still does a good job at keeping my CPU at 50 degrees in games. Any thoughts would be appreciated as the upgrade itch is swamping my mind!

If you were playing at 1440p I'd have said the graphics card will be better value, but with 1080p and some fairly old games (& including racing), that's harder to call. I think I'd still go for the graphics card, even if you're bottlenecked, because you can always re-use it when you upgrade the CPU. The 5600 is a fairly substantial bump on the 12100 in some games, so if you go with the CPU, I'd much prefer that on the 12100.

So I ran some DayZ and on high settings it was getting 100 FPS with a 40 FPS low. I need to sort Rivatuner out and get the right layout.
I then ran 3dmark time spy and the score was 5099 with a CPU score of 3386 and a GPU score of 5600.
I will install NFS heat and test that once I sort Rivatuner out but it might be a few days before I get to do it.

I am tempted to go I3 12100f and XT 6650 route and later on I can stick an i5 in as this would be the cheapest way to go.

That's a really good value upgrade option. AM5 would be relatively too expensive and the 6650XT is a great 1080P/1440P gaming option.

You could just get the GPU now and upgrade the CPU and motherboard later on?

I would take the 5600 over the 12100f you wiĺl get more fps at 1% and .1% lows so less dips.

Wow 5p difference!

I guess the AMD is now more appealing. I have a CM Hyper 212 BE I could reuse on the AMD platform too whereas I would need to buy a new cooler if I went Intel.

Thank you for the help everyone, truly appreciate it!

The Intel has an IPC advantage which is good for gaming but the AMD has 2 more cores and 4 more threads which can be helpful for games that need more cores.

Second hand AMD stuff is also cheap as chips and you could upgrade to a 5800X. You could also upgrade later on with the Intel option to a 13500 or 13700 which would easily beat the AMD AM4 options in gaming.

What would make more of a difference down the line would be upgrade to a better GPU, because modern games see a better uplift with a GPU upgrade than CPU upgrade.

That being said, the margins aren't huge and you are getting some serious value for your money now that the shortage has ended. Either would be a serious upgrade over your current rig.

You could change the ram to this and add £15 to the cost and get a 6700, £30 more you get the 6700xt , but it's a sloppy slope in terms of cost.

I have 2 x8gb 3000mhz ram coming my way as my old man is upgrading his ram. Bonus to my upgrade!
Means a 5600X can be factored in or and I5 12400F.
But the in-laws are coming for 2 weeks so no upgrades until they leave.

The mother in-law don't. She won't try to understand either. Don't matter as I'm patient and happy to keep over researching as it's fun
You should also be looking at getting a quality psu especially with a more power hungry gpu.

Kolink are budget units .

It's on my mind as I know my current PSU is budget and probably not a wise idea using it on a bigger GPU. I was hoping the RX 7600 XT or 7700 would be released soon and consider that toward the end of the year, in theory the performance jump should offer a longer lifespan. I don't need to rush and I know waiting is not the best choice but I ah e a month to play with and anything can happen.
