Conflicted - BMW M140i or Hyundai i20N

Thanks for all the input, it is appreciated. It is reassuring to know the back end won't decide to go off on a journey on its own easily. :p

Does anyone use 3rd party warranty companies that you would recommend? Had a quick look at some and they are quoting anywhere from £60 per month to £100 per month. Think I would probably take the BMW service plan.
Get the BMW warranty

Insane comparison imo. Sure the Hyundai will be cheaper in all aspects and be “raggable” and “fun” like all smaller fwd hot hatches but the BMW has a proper engine, the correct wheel drive and a much more refined drive.

The B58 can write cheques the chassis cannot cash I’m told in the one series though. Plenty of aftermarket bits to help that though.

Bmw traction control and dsc is superb even trying to drive like a tool it nanny’s the life out of you and won’t let you do anything too stupid. Only a button press from turning it off though :).
Yeah IIRC there’s one or two systems, so could be either partially (recommended for snow) or fully turned off.

I drove my 130i in the snow albeit only locally and was fine, just went slow.

Once tried to be clever and do a drift though which meant I nearly mounted a kerb. Never felt my ego or pride bruised like that before

Still need to sign up for one of the skid pan or drift days

That's the case for most performance BMWs - but a lot of it is driver incompetence

Mine is 400+ ft/lbs through the rear wheels albeit in a 5 series not a chirp with the traction or DSC engaged As soon as it’s off it is more than happy to have a bite at you

I owned an M140i for three years and have just ordered an i20n.

The BMW is a brilliant car and if you can find a good one I would go for it. However, I would really look at what your priorities are. If you want something that handles and is better for trackdays and twisty B roads, but is still good as a daily, get the i20n. After the test drive I had I would say the i20n is in a different league in terms of driver involvement. If you are not bothered about that and just want something that is fast in straight line, has a nicer sounding engine and is more refined then get the BMW.

Size-wise I would actually say the i20n has more space in the rear but has a smaller boot.

It is amusing how some people immediately dismiss the i20n, I assume without first driving one - their loss I guess!

Ultimately, I would test drive both and make a call from that, you could always own one for a few years then swap to the other. In my opinion, being a car enthusiast is about having different experiences and ticking off boxes.

Hope that helps

I had an M140i and it was awesome and not bad on fuel or insurance. You can get an LSD after market to help settle the back end but then do you want that cost when it already comes with the Hyundai (never driven one).

You can get an LSD from BMW for about ~1600 quid and maintain the warranty, so i'd definitely include that in the calculations.

I’d have, and do have the m140i.

I’m a bit of a serial car changer, but this I’ve had for 3 years in May! Usually 2 years before I get a bit bored.

It does everything I want. RWD, nice place to be, sounds nice when I want and it can also be lazy when I want
