I usually visit the US around Easter and I am considering buying a GPU whilst over there. Anyone any experience doing this and if so what store would you recommend, Best Buy, or perhaps order from Amazon and deliver to the hotel? Or is it a silly idea?

Factor in the tax you will need to pay when you return to the UK if spending more than your allowance - https://www.gov.uk/bringing-goods-into-uk-personal-use/arriving-in-Great-Britain as pretty much any GPU is going to be over your personal allowance.
Once you've added the tax and duties on top of the USA price with the bad exchange rate we currently have and all of a sudden shopping in the USA is far from a cheap option and, on top of that, you will possibly have warranty issues if the hardware develops a problem after you are back in the UK
