I stood on one of the bottom treads of my staircase a couple of days ago and heard a crack. It feels spongy now and I think the tread has come away from the riser (I think it's called a kite step). It's enclosed so I can't access it from underneath.
I've rung several carpenters and had one quote back so far but it seems expensive to me so I'd just like to check if it is the going rate and what I should be expecting to pay to have it repaired. They guy said it was an easy fix as they get them all the time but he's quoted me £500 to have it done. I understand I'll have to pay to have it done properly but I was thinking it would be about the £250 - £300 mark. I'll wait until I have a couple more quotes though before proceeding but would be nice to know what people's thoughts are on the price.
