Is this now the norm for car dealers?

Please report this if you can, I'm hot having it with times are hard nonsense. These dealers have had quite a cushy 2 and a bit years.

They ended up having to replace the whole subframe and any other broken bits attached to it under warranty. Something that serious was always going to come back to haunt them as it's not something other garages will ignore.

The MOT was done by a seperate garage (next door to them). Suprisingly an old one with a good reputation. I'm guessing they trusted the dealer and signed it off without seeing it. The dealer could claim they didn't notice it themselves. But now it's known about they have to fix it, or be dragged in to a fraud investigation with the MOT garage because they sold an unroadworthy car.

Yep, it's pretty bad. I found a car that the dealer had got through the MOT, with no advisories with an obviously splitting front subframe due to rust. So watch out for MOT fraud as well (they can go to prison for this).

Why are you using two accounts these days @NasherUK @Nasher ? :p

To the OP, what price range and what have you been looking at. I recently bought a used car and found most of the cars I looked to be fairly reasonable, once I upped my budget.
Saying that I did go view a 640d grand coupe and that was really tatty considering the price and mileage were both reasonable. The interior was fairly shocking and all the wheels curbed.

I have been looking for a car atm, and amazed how many dealers are selling cars that have had decats, so haven't got a mot, in theory

I often find buying private ends up just better all round. You can generally get a feel of the type of owner they've been with the car. Often the car is in better condition despite being cheaper than dealers, and has not had dodgey cover up work done. You can ask them direct questions and gauge reaction.
I find people dont want to buy from private would prefer to buy from big company for thousands more as they get a small warranty and a finance deal, both my wife and sister tried to sell there cars with low mileage they had had from new for about £1500 less than going rate to give someone a deal rather than give it to dealer and no one was interested, wife had even paid for next mot and service and could transfer but no one wanted it, so after dealer gets it they make money both ends if you know what I mean

Basically how I ended up with a Qashqai which wasn't what I set out to buy. Needed something in a hurry due to unfortunate timing on selling/multiple vehicle issues and so many of the private, dealer, etc. sales were time wasters, silly prices and so on. Nearby Nissan dealer had it ready in as advertised condition and reasonable price.

Looked into a couple for instance supposedly in good running condition and dashboard lit up like a Christmas tree with error symbols/warnings.

Been looking at petrol saloon/coupe cars that are 3.5 litres or bigger. Was looking at XKR and XFR. I can't stand diesels, I've had a 5 cylinder Volvo diesel before and I didn't get the hype it still sounded like a tractor.

Basically I want something that is a bit silly, I'm not bothered about £600 road tax and 18mpg as I don't do that many miles. I just want a car that sounds good and not always in the garage.

The S-Max powershifts are known for their flawed gearbox design. Not if but when it goes. I would literally pick any other engine over that.

We were looking for an auto Galaxy/S-Max for the mrs as she's only got a auto licence (medical grounds). After about 20 ads we gave up. In fairness most were straight up and mentioned G/B issues but some just mentioned "light on dash, runs fine"

There is a reason those are known as power****. Don't buy any Ford with that gearbox.

Thanks for the sense checks guys, I almost YOLO'd it.

On topic, they don't even try to hide it in the adverts very well:

No mention of that in the advert text, but the other photos have a photoshopped dealership background to look less back-street dealer (ad)

Poorly photoshopped damage (and background) that you can see in the other photos. It's pretty scabby from the other angles so much have given up after doing the back (ad)

I don't know whether to laugh or cry at how bad that is and how someone will still buy it.

I recently bought a XF 3.0d S so the hot the diesel. I wanted a petrol when I started looking, but found it rather hard to find a petrol in that size car. Even considered buying a JDM Toyota crown with a 3.5L V6.

But ended up going for a diesel, as the vast majority of cars in this segment where diesel new. Looked at all the usual, e-class, cls, 5 series etc. Found the XF to be good value for money and a good all rounder and was a well know local dealer who gets his cars straight from the main dealer. All jag history bar the last service.

Lexus IS-F.

3 months later and still the same nonsense, looks like the market is just like this now, full of overpriced poorly specced cars in below average condition. :(

That and private sellers charging dealer prices

Went to view a car at a dealers yesterday, thankfully it was local so not much time wasted. FSH they said, "stack of paperwork" they said...the reality was there was no service booklet so idk where FSH came from (they said they'd find it, yeh right), and the stack of paperwork was literally 2 invoices.

When I bought my truck no FSH despite being advertised as such and saying they'd get it to me yada yada, I didn't really care about it anyhow - I happened to move near the Nissan dealer who sold it when new and turns out they have the full service history of the vehicle on their system. The VW commercial dealer who sold it was completely lying to me about the details.
