Cheapest 1st gaming pc build.

Is it worth getting a couple of m.2 drives (if motherboard takes more than one, and a normal ssd drive, I assume staying away from the bog standard hard drives due to their speed.
nah.
you'd want one ssd (doesn't matter if sata or nvme) ideally 1tb for os, games, programs
can have a hdd for data/videos/media

depending on how much storage is required, can usually get away with just having a 1tb ssd (see my spec above)

You’re all wonderful people with these tips and helpful builds. I do appreciate you taking the time.

So after careful discussions with my sister, we agreed that the budget could be upped to nearer the 1k mark, still would be nice to not waste money for just the sake of it. Is it worth getting a couple of m.2 drives (if motherboard takes more than one, and a normal ssd drive, I assume staying away from the bog standard hard drives due to their speed.
Do you need more than one m.2 drive... not really unless your nephew is going into something that requires a scratch disk or you run out of space for games (some people do run a second drive for games though). I would suggest gen4 and ideally one with dram though.

My personal rig has nvme and sata ssd's, outside of benchmarks I can't really notice much difference in normal day to day use, nvme does have the benefits of support direct storage etc in games that support it.

As for hard drives, they're archival bulk storage type drives these days

in terms of eventual upgradeability, my spec has one more upgrade for the cpu = 5800x3d
the 5600 specced will handle most graphics card up to 3070ti/radeon 6800 level, 3080/6800xt level is probably a stretch, but doable if you're running 1440p
5800x3d will handle a 4080 for gaming
so you still have decent upgrade paths for both cpu and gpu

the 650w psu will cope with anything mid-high end, ofc not the latest 4090...the 3080 and 4080 is probably going to be fine
regardless i don't think you'll be shelling out for £1000 gpus anytime soon and will most likely stick to mid-range even in the future hence why i saw no need to overspend on the psu

if you want a system with better upgradeability but lesser performance now then tetras' build isn't a bad shout (but will require a gpu upgrade sooner)
i'd change the psu to the 650w one i listed and add a cooler right off the bat, but that's about all i'd change...basically tinkering around the edges

Nephew thinks the thing can be turned into a light show extravaganza, with a hint of the red light going back and forth like the cylons from Battlestar Galactica
Lo I'm old enough to remember that, there is another 6700xt for similar price that comes with a free game but one year less warranty and no RGB.

Or to this for £10 more than the Asrock with 3 year warranty and free game.

Well you can get usb based 'knightrider light bar' which is basically the same... and depending on the rgb you can get them to cycle through etc

We have been officially out geeked by tamzzy and there is an unoffical hint of a human cylon hybrid in the pic , if you look carefully you can just see a glimpse of the mythical creature.

The new series of BSG certainly improved upon the original and the first 2 seasons of the remake were great. Mad Admiral Kane of the Pegasus was a personal favourite of mine and her unknowingly giving Starbuck the pep talk to assassinate herself was amazing. I may have to have a rewatch.

Oh PC advice, lots of that good stuff already given by tamzzy and Tetras so yeah buy that shizzle and have fun.

they're the new versions.... some of us can remember the ORIGINAL galactica (no moving side pods) with the likes of Lorne Green and Dirk Benedict, man I'm feeling old now lol
yes, i wasn't even born then and my parents hadn't even met each other :P

Maybe it's an age thing, I did grow up with the original, but I'm far more likely to rewatch the original (and the follow on Galactica 1980, yes it was cheesy) than I am the new BSG....

Anyway's I suppose we should get back on topic lol

I was born 71 and grew up with the original, I think the remake was a great series and improved upon the original concept. Totally subjective so if you prefer the original thats fine, this is not the gpu sub forum thankfully so feel free to like what you like.

The topic is settled and tamzzy and Tetras had fingers of fury to give Alan very relevant advice. If Alan needs more advice for his nephew I am sure Tetras will beat me to the punch so I am subscribed here for geekdom and BSG.
