Road Cycling

I just really can't get on board with cycling in the dark, especially solo - maybe as part of a large group but even then I would really want to keep to well lit areas only.

From my previous post about cycling at night, i asked in a local facebook group to see if there were any specific reasons for not seeing many people out at night. Certainly wasn't expecting this answer
Loud clicky freewheel and big MTB-esque floodlight and you'll be fine! ;)

@MM-Seat I had something similar and i just contacted wahoo support, i tried a new battery and a reset without any differences they posted me a new one and its been fine since. I compare it with an apple watch and 99% of the time they match or at worst 1/2 bpm difference.

Thank you, I compared mine to an Apple Watch and there is a good 20 - 30 bpm difference. It’s a couple of years old now the tickr so might struggle with warranty.

Always worth checking with Wahoo. Even if you don’t get offered a free replacement you may get a hefty discount on a replacement.

I think I'll take it much easier between now and Mallorca (11 days time) and eat a bit more, to try and ensure I hit it with good form.
I've not really ridden this week, aside a low effort indoor ride on Wednesday and I've definitely eaten a fair bit (I almost daren't step on the scales) and today I went out with my usual guys and beat quite a few PB's without really trying. (Mind you, the one 5 minute climb I had a go at, I didn't beat... but I did do my best time up it for about 8 months)

It's actually given me a nice confidence boost, ready for Mallorca on Thursday. I don't think I quite have the form of last year when I went, but maybe not as far off as I worried I would be.

Crazy how many cyclists are out and about too.
You're in Denia? There and Calpe are well known cyclist destinations and many Pro teams & riders are based there, or train there. Lots of training camps go there too.

Probably well within the top 10 destinations for pro cyclists in Europe. Probably even top 5 of mainland Europe.

Be careful with the wild boar, probably no joke but maybe less likely they'll be around populated areas which you'll be thinking of riding in darkness - maybe avoid more forested areas and the remote mountains where they're more likely to be roaming at night. They will scavenge from bins and stuff, quite a few European cities they're a pest as will raid rubbish for scraps as they'll eat almost anything. They're quite fast too - up to 25mph! :o

I’m not one for solo cycling in the dark either.
Never understood why people don't like riding at night. I find it very therapeutic, especially somewhere warm like that. It won't get very 'dark'!

Anyone had problems with Wahoo Tickr? Convinced mine is underreporting
I had an original TICKR 'Blue' (v1) which was bombproof over many years (oct '14 - mid '21). Gradually died as wouldn't 'wake up' to use it (without popping the battery and refitting) but was accurate as far as I'm aware during that time (no reason to doubt it). Replaced it with the v2 and was initially good, but did have a few weeks of issues where it would seem to read low, or fluxuate it's readings when riding (fairly normal), but then any efforts it wouldn't register any change/increase. Like it was 'locked' reading the tempo HR. I changed batteries a couple of times and it would be ok for a week then do it again. I did have a few other issues with the cheapo batteries I'd got (EverReady) just not lasting very long, switching back to my preferred (Panasonic) have not seen an issue with the TICKR since...

Maybe, but Wahoo Support are one of the best in the business so certainly worth seeing what they say.

Yeah, i love riding at night. Where i am though is fairly remote/mountainous. Around 40 minutes inland from Denia, so presumably where all those pro teams come for big climbs :p

Cheers @Martynt74 & @Roady raises a support request with them.

My mate has gifted me a AlpKit Bomber handlebar with extreme flare as he couldn’t get on with it. Suppose it’s made my do-it-all Dolan more gravel bike now. Will report back after I’ve ridden it a bit more.

Got the email from Strava re price increases, given it's so long since the story broke. It's incredible that it's taken this long to get an official email out. Between Strava and Garmin i find the general customer service pretty appalling. It's crazy that such big firms can have such a huge following (myself included), and yet be so poor at customer relations!

Got out for my first ride this morning that wasn't just a leisurely one with the wife. Only around an hour, but was lovely just riding around the orange groves on quiet farm tracks between the fields. Hoping now that i've done it once i'll force myself to get up and out most mornings.

Downside being since my steroid injection for my foot, the pain has shifted back a bit and now feels more like plantar fasciitis which is annoying. In a bid to try and help, i've swapped my pedals for some decent flat pedals and just normal trainers. Felt fairly decent and having some decent flat pedals vs the cheap ones most mtb bikes come with made a big difference on slippage.

I think a lot of companies flourish when there is little competition, grow to the size they are largely unassailable and then stagnate. They have a lot of bloat and try to keep the profits increasing so they reduce quality, increase prices and reduce the quality of their support and services.

I might have agreed 2 years ago, but I feel like Strava have really made efforts in the last 12 to 18 months to start improving it again. (Did they get bought out or something?)

My gripes with Strava are feature mis-matches between the app and website. For instance, create a manual activity. In the app (on Android), you can edit the start time & duration but you can't do that on the website. I also still can't find how you flag an activity on the app.

I opened a ticket with support last December as if I go into View Weekly Effort on the app, not all activities from that week are in the list. Support said known bug, but no idea when we will fix it

I have a reminder set for a week before my subscription renewing - will decide then if I bin it or not. I need to see what breaks on VeloViewer I drop to free Strava as I use the Explorer Map to go exploring new roads and areas.

:( First flat tyre today whilst out and about. No phone either which meant a ~2 mile walk back to the house. Luckily hadn't got far.

I went exploring and ended up on a gravely track, was fine for a bit but then noticed the front tyre was completely flat. There wasn't a pop sound, and haven't had chance yet to get the tyre off and expect. Did get home and tried re-inflating but it's just holding nothing, so i imagine it's a big tear as opposed to a small puncture.

Maybe the track was a bit much for the tyres. There were a couple faily big pot holes, and the rocks here can be pretty sharp.

Looks like a trip into Denia tomorrow to the bike shop, will likely just revert back to regular butyl tubes. Not sure i can justify the risk again of TPU!
