Thermal pads size? Gigabyte Aorus 2070 Super

I’m very reluctantly going to have to open up my GPU and reapply the thermal paste/pads. Never done it before and been putting it off too long as it is, but the fans keep revving up and down CONTINUOUSLY while playing anything at all. Hot point is at 105c almost instantly after booting up any game.

After a bit of online research, it seems to be a very common issue with the Gigabyte Aorus 2070 Super. Pads and paste seem to do the trick. If I don’t screw it up before we get to that point lol.

I can’t for the love of me find the right measurements for the thermal pads for the above card. It’s not the windforce, is the Aorus. Does anyone know what size pads I’m going to need to order, or failing that, a realiable source to find out? Emailing Gigabyte directly has been a trying experience!

Maybe email them, watch some cooler removal videos or just order all sizes (1-4mm) and see what you need once opened.

Usually the pads are ok and just needs paste. But I did just put a block on a MSI GPU and all the pads are like playdo, so they all ripped in bits. So if I put the cooler back on they will have to be replaced.

The person I spoke to was very unhelpful when I emailed. Very quick to respond, but far more concerned with me providing POP than answering my question. They ignored the pads size question twice sadly.

I’ll definitely watch some videos. I think I’m just going to have to buy different sizes and figure it out when it’s open. I think I’m more nervous as I can’t seem to find a decent on with my exact card lol. Does anyone have any recommendations on a good thermal paste? :)

There's loads of paste that are all pretty similar. I use mx4 or as5 they might not be the very best but up there and cheap

I did it! But not without a scare lol. I was wondering if anyone could shine some light on what might have gone wrong the first time.

I opened it up. The paste on the die was super dry and crusty. Cleaned everything up. Reapplied and put it all back together the same way I'd taken it apart. Ensue panic when the second monitor can't be detected and the first one is flickering on and off/with half the screen going black. Turned it off. I broke the news to gf that I might be an idiot. Turned it back on and before even starting up it was making a buzzing noise. Turned it off instantly.

repeated all of the above again. Didn't do anything differently. Reinstalled and it's all good. Hotspot temp has come down by over 30c (max's out at 80c, was 105) at load. No more screaming fans. But left confused a bit about what might have gone wrong the first time. The only thing I can think of, due to the buzzing, is that one of the 8pin connectors was slightly loose? No idea!

Anyways, I have no one to share my success story with that would understand what I'm talking about so just thought I'd update this post :) Thanks for your help @cjgardens
