ASUS ROG ZEPHYRUS G15 GA503QS Gaming Laptop. Is it worth repairing?

ASUS ROG ZEPHYRUS G15 GA503QS NVIDIA RTX 3080 32GB 15.6 QHD 165Hz Ryzen R9-5900HS Gaming Laptop

My son's laptop is fried the motherboard (GA503QS MB._16G/R9-5900HS) and thermal module (GA503QS TH MOD ASSY) need replacing. Asus are refusing to repair under their warranty (long story).

The prices from Asus are crazy for the parts... MB £1847,70 and Module £24,57. I could probably pick up a refurbished or new one for less.

Is it worth trying to fix it myself given the cost or does anyone know where I could pick up the parts at a more reasonable price?

Maybe it's just a lost cause?
 
I only know what the repair company Asus use have told me that the MB and thermal module have to be replaced,
Maybe only a component on the MB is damaged I don,t know. It never occurred to me to open it up and check before sending it off as I thought the issue would be covered by the warranty.
 
This is their report...

"Defective mainboard and thermal module which has been caused by spillage".

Now there was some liquid (Milk) spilled on the laptop, but it was several months ago and the laptop worked fine for a long time afterwards.
They also said that the case had been opened by someone and the Thermel module had been bent/broken.
This made me very suspicious of their claims, as the only people to have opened the laptop were the very same repair company for a previous issue.
My feeling is they have seen the dried liquid stains and are using it as an excuse to void the warranty.

Sounds about right. Probably not that much really wrong with it. Id have a go at fixing it! I fixed a lot of crap today and am on a roll! :D
 
Is this LetMeRepair? they pretty much always try on the "spillage" line first to shirk responsibility. One of the reasons I won't touch Asus with a bargepole. (Also the quality of their repair work in my experience is shoddy being generous).

Yes, it is LetMeRepair. It's put me off buying any more ASUS laptops in the future.

Honestly I personally won't touch Asus with a bargepole these days - aside from the original Asus Eee I've regretted all my other purchases from them combined with dealing with RMAs on behalf of other people the experience with their products and aftersales service has left a bad taste in my mouth.

You can buy a top of the line premium Asus product and if something goes wrong, even on day 1, and you can't get it swapped out by the retailer they'll happily send you out someone else's shoddily refurbished RMA return as a replacement and that to me just isn't acceptable.

But I do need you to pop over into my thread as need some bits before I send it back and call it done :). Total cost of repair? A few caps and a bit of solder. It took literally a few mins of measurements and my eyes to spot the issue. ill need to take the board out and repair a few areas a tiny bit for a lasting repair but for now I quickly went in with the iron and popped a few filter caps off which I will get readings for and replace.

I believe the thermal module they are talking about is the liquid metal all over the board... I just googled the second part and there is nothing wrong with it... I mean it needs a damn good clean in general but the only issues I can see are the bits ive gone in and fixed. Very easily detected under the scope.

Update and pics on the machine over in my thread anybody that's interested. It's done, its buttoned up and its ready to come home.
 
Very impressive repair, and I am sure @embalse will be over the moon with the result, hopefully it came in at less than the £1847.odd than ASUS wanted. :cry:

haha very much so :) It really is a lovely little machine and scrapping a 5900hs and 3080 for such a small issue would have been a crime!
