So with the release of the 7800X3D chips I’ve decided to switch platform from Intel to AMD. Having only built a pc once im not entirely sure about this. Do i need to do a fresh windows install.

Also the current system has a 1tb SSD i was thinking about adding another for the operating system and the existing ssd for the games etc. With that being said if i need a new windows install is it possible to delete windows from my existing ssd leaving all my games on there etc. Then add the other ssd to the system and doing the new windows install on that.

Personally I would be doing a fresh installation of windows. I would also take the opportunity to upgrade from a SSD to a gen 4 or even gen 5 NVME drive as they are much faster than a normal SSD.

What I used to do is copy my whole Steam folder onto the fresh installation if I am only using a single storage solution but these days I have a 1Tb NVME drove for Windows and other programs and a second NVME drive (2Tb) for my games so I don't have to mess around like that.

You windows licence will no longer be valid after changing motherboard and cpu. You can re register windows. If you did that then you might find everything works ok. You might find some subtle issues though. Safer to blitz any cached data and registry settings and do a complete refresh of your system drive and OS.

Thanks for the advice. Ill add a secondary SSD to the shopping list. The one ive got is a gen 3 nvme m2 so its still half decent for game storage.
