So my friend recently upgraded from his 2080 to a 4080 only to find that the 4080 is a lot longer and wouldn't fit in his case.

I have a Zotac 10gb 3080 and am thinking about upgrading to a 4080/4090 and am wondering if i am going to run into the same problem as i have very little space in my case for a bigger card

Are there any 4080s or 4090s which are the same length as my current 3080 ?

Why do people buy GPUs without checking the size specs that's super easy to find? Do you guys buy furniture and appliances without checking if they fit as well?

Because they aren't computer experts/nerds and just assume they will fit in their computers like their previous graphics cards have. I've gone from a 980 to a 1080 to a 3080 and they have all easily fit inside my case, never had to think or worry about sizes before. This is the first time i've heard about a GPU being too big for a case. I don't really spend any time reading up on computer tech other than when i upgrade once every few years and at no point has that research ever involved GPU sizes.

The FE are usually among the shortest cards, but given the price of one of them, probably cheaper to buy a new case.

What is your case?

There's a list of dimensions here (scroll down), not sure how accurate it is.

384mm clearance, so in theory practically anything on the market should fit
I returned a GB 4090 because online spec stated 350mm, that didn't account for the mb support bracket that extends past the motherboard, and if at the end of the motherboard space, it has a metal lip that makes mounting the support bracket a bit tricky, doable but then it gets a bit more complicated as you don't want to as much put a hair line scratch on it when testing for coil whine in case of rejecting it, so it got sent back.

Now I love a chunky cooler, I re-used 2 AC Extremes on multi gpu setups over 4 gens, but the gpu cooler sizes are absolutely insane this gen, anything to make you think the price increase is worth it!

I'm not an interior designer but I'd still measure up before buying a new sofa or dining table :p

Probably for the same reason some slate a product for months and then end up buying one in the end?

Yes, I am referring to Grim. He did that with his Alienware monitor :D
