I kind of need a temporary car for "months". But I'm not sure how long.
Too long for a rental. Too short to want to spend a lot.

I don't really care what the car is. It will mainly be used to go to the beach, go mountain biking at weekends. So won't clock up many miles.

I guess I'm looking at Peugeot 207 type cars?

Main car is a 207 automatic which has been great.

sub 1k cars are a real gamble nowadays, what was a 1k car a couple of years ago is now a 3k car with how crazy the used market is.

So a 1k car now would have been a 250 quid car. Saying that you can still get lucky with cheap cars but you really need to know what you're doing when looking at them or bring someone who does.

I really wouldn't recommend a Peugeot at any price point especially not this end of the market, you really don't want to be dealing with dodgy French electrics. But at that end of the market it's normally about what's actually around and it's condition rather than looking for a specific model i'd say.

Keep it as simple as possible, petrol engine with no bells and whistles. Try and find something with a cam chain rather than a belt unless you've got proof it's been changed, look up each model you see for common issues and make sure you check the MOT history.

I just picked up a lovely Renault Clio 1.4 2007 with 98,000 on the clock for £700. So it can be done.

Yeah I know. Anything under 1k is really bargain bucket.
And good point about chain. My old s2000 had a chain and it was really old. No issues.

The thought did enter my mind about going all out and going electric but I know it would be a total waste. And I'd probably end up resenting the monthly payments quite quickly.

For me it’s just for baby duties, so the mrs can park it wherever she wants and I don’t have to worry about dings and scratches, wear and tear ect. It’s got a fresh mot and if it dies I can afford to lose £700, if it doesn’t I can sell it in a years time and maybe even make some money.

Yeah same as what I was after. Bung the bike on back, the kayak in the boot. Maybe just drop seats permanently and bung bike in back rather than faff with racks.

Sell it for little or no loss or even profit.
