Hi,

Below is my current build from back in 2018; it's starting to struggle I need to look at upgrading:

CPU: Intel Core i5-8400
Cooler: NZXTKrakenX72
GPU: Nvidia GTX V2 1060-6GB
MBD: ASRock Z370 Pro4
RAM:Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 3000 C15 4x8GB
PSU: Corsair CP-9020122-UK CX Series 650 W

Ideally would be great if I can keep some of the above or do I need to start from scratch?

Thanks in advance.

Mark

Yeah, I guess that would have been helpful; thanks.

So seeing lag in newer games and having to run them in low quality to even make them playable. Have a ASUS ROG Swift PG279Q Quad HD 27" monitor so running at the recommended 2560x1440.
In terms of general use, it just seems to be running much slower on day-to-day activities.

So my original thought was better GPU with higher onboard memory and/or a new CPU. Just not sure what I can get away with without changing everything else.

So max around 2k in terms of budget, just want to spend it wisely had get the most life out of the components I buy.

Don’t want to spend it and then need to spend again in the next couple of years.

Thanks

Thanks happy to spend the money if need and a new PSU is not a huge issue any recommendations?

My MBD would be good with the above additions?
its that 1060 which needs changing, I'd get a 4070 which would be great at 1440p for ages and see what you think. If that £2k needs to be spent I would add a Ryzen 7 7800X3D DDR5 platform into the equation. Big bucks though to be bang up to date?

I have an 1TB SSD, if I can get away with not rebuilding then I rather would not, as long as I can spend some money and give myself a few more years.

Been looking at the Gigabyte GeForce RTX 4070 WindForce OC 12GB GDDR6X PCI-Express Graphics Card for around £599.

It's been said the 4070 at its present price isn't worth it
Yeap certainly looking at both side of the argument. I only play single player games, so my usage prob falls into the 4070.

It’s a big price difference, but if £599 is all I need to spend out of a budget of 2k and it means I’m good for a few more years I think it might be worth it.

Would love anymore thoughts input?

I'll stick with just going 4070, proviso being there will be some bottlenecking with your 8400, its a powerful gpu.
The reason for suggesting a 9600k/9700k is that they overclock to 5ghz (on a good mobo!), plus you already have a great cooler! I'd go 9600k/4.8ghz for around 100 quid with 50 quid back from 8400 sale. Nifty little upgrade

I’d probably drop in a 9900k, though looking at 9900K prices maybe moving to another platform makes sense. A 5700x is a much better chip and and you could buy the chip and motherboard new for less than a used 9900K.

On the graphics card, I hold out until the RX 7800 cards are released then make a decision. The GPU market is a little stale.

I have a i7 8700 (but started this build with a i5 8400 like the OP)
Gigabyte Z370P D3 mobo
16 GB DDR4 3000 (2x8GB) C15 RAM
Ive had a RTX 2060 then RTX 2070 and now RTX 4070 in this and I run a 2560x1440 monitor at 144hz
frankly I was quite happy with the 2070 but I had money burning a hole in my bank account

What Im seeing is some games struggle with just 6 cores and 8GB of VRAM is starting to look a little weak.
if youre happy with 1440p (as I am) I would drop a i7 8700 or 9700 in that mobo and look at 6700XT
