As someone posted above, there's propaganda on both sides. Trying to now pretend Bahkmut is insignificant now the Ukrainians have lost it is more of the same. They were willing to lose thousands of people trying to hold it. I don't think they like withdrawing /giving up ground, and it's their country so I can understand that but it's a very costly strategy.

They had to make a stand somewhere.

Where did the 4000 figure come from? I thought Ukraine doesn't give casualty numbers?
Probably a calculation using defenders advantage which has been branded around that an attacker will lose around 4 men for every defender that is lost or in this 5 to 1 (might not be an exaggeration given the tactics Russia and Wagnar have employed).

I don't know at what point but at somewhere along the line Russia obsessed with taking Bahkmut even though it didn't have strategic value (desperate for any sort I win I guess). My thoughts are once the Ukrainian command realised this and saw that Russia was willing to pour more and more men and machinery into the grinder it was seen as an opportunity to bleed Russia white and as they had already destroyed most of the city so they might as well contain the carnage to Bahkmut and take out as much of the Russian offensive capabilities as possible. From what I've seen the topography doesn't favour Russia either, not sure if Russia will really be able to hang on to Bahkmut without pushing Ukraine off the hills to the west.

how do the UK tax payers feel about paying Ukraine 10 Billion and more during a cost of living crisis, where 1 in 4 families cannot afford food and clothing, 1 in 3 with children being affected, wouldn't that 10 billion plus help UK tax paying citizens during this tough time?

Same thing with America, they issued like 80 billion already.

Very happy for my tax £ to help Ukraine. Its a bargain really, Russia's imperial plans are being put back over a decade if not much much longer. We haven't had to put any troops on the ground, just supply weapons, training and intelligence. The true figure is actually far lower as we didn't pay the figures for the hardware we are supplying them with.

Let's put Bakhmut in perspective.

I'm fine with it. Partly as a matter of principle and partly because it's a lot cheaper than allowing free rein to the regime of an imperialist authoritarian dictator. It's much better for the UK to support Ukraine fighting Putin's regime in Ukraine than it would be for the UK to oppose the same regime a bit later after it had looted Ukraine (genociding Ukrainians on the way) and invaded further west. Where do you think the UK should respond? When the imperialist authortarian regime invades Poland? Belgium? France? Never?

The choice you present is wrong in several ways anyway. Firstly, the cost of living crisis in the UK is not as bad as you claim. Secondly, a large part of the cost of living crisis in the UK is due to the very regime you want to conquer everywhere. Which would obviously make things much worse for the UK. Thirdly, £10B wouldn't do much to change the situation in the UK. It's nowhere near enough money. Fourthly, the UK hasn't actually sent £10B to Ukraine. You're pretending it's a payment, actual money. It's not. It's materials, training, equipment. The actual cost is nowhere near £10B.

If there was a referendum for a temporary extra penny in the pound tax for supporting Ukraine, I'd vote for it. Better to help them fighting over there than to have to fight ourselves over here. We've all seen how the genocidal Putin regime conducts war, both directly and through its war criminal prison scum mercenary outfit.
