Bakhmut had a population of about 70k, not really on the same scale as London. Wikipedia says it had an area of arpund 41km2, so probably about 6km across.

The truth: Kissinger didn't say that (there has been no 'decision to put Ukraine into NATO' yet) and there's more to his argument. Moreover, he explains that he previously opposed NATO membership for Ukraine, but now supports it.

Mr. Kissinger does believe, however, that the Biden administration has done “many things” right.

“I support them on Ukraine,” he says. “From my perspective, the Ukraine war is won, in terms of precluding a Russian attack on allied nations in Europe. It is highly unlikely to occur again.”

But there are “other dangers that can rise out of Russia. As we are ending the war, we should keep in mind that Russia was a major influence on the region for hundreds of years, caught in its own ambivalence between admiration and feelings of inferiority or of danger coming from Europe.”

That ambivalence, he suggests, was behind this war: “I think the offer to put Ukraine into NATO was a grave mistake and led to this war. But its scale, and its nature, is a Russian peculiarity, and we were absolutely right to resist it.”

He now believes that Ukraine—“now the best-armed country in Europe”— belongs in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

“I’m in the ironical position that I was alone when I opposed membership, and I’m nearly alone when I advocate NATO membership.”

Before this war I was opposed to membership of Ukraine in NATO because I feared it would start exactly the process we are seeing now. Now that the process has reached this level, the idea of a neutral Ukraine in these conditions is no longer meaningful.

And at the end of the process that I described, it ought to be guaranteed by NATO in whatever forms NATO can develop, but I believe Ukrainian membership in NATO would be an appropriate outcome.

Not ukraine related but looks like iran is currently dropping bombs and artillery in Afghanistan. Not sure why but ok

Ukraine related

Russian foreign ministry has released what it calls a peace plan. It says to get Russia to stop fighting, Ukraine must agree to:

* Recognise all Russian occupied territories as Russian

* Refuse to join EU and NATO

* Refuse any assistance from West, including weapons, money and humanitarian aid

* Adopt a Pro Russian political status

* Make Russian the only language allowed to be spoken in Ukraine

The offer isn't for Ukraine, it's so the Russian people can see that their benevolent government tried to reason with the Nazis and understand that any lives lost in this glorious struggle against the imperialistic west are not the Kremlins fault as they tried to me "reasonable" :rolleyes:

I will throw this in the face of anyone who claims Ukraine is unreasonably rejecting peace talks.
