Decided to upgrade to AM5, will possibly go in at 7700X given I have a suspicion we might hear more about 8000 series later this year.

I am not interested in Asus (although did briefly look at the Strix B650E-E). Too many problems with the networking on that board for my liking and I am not generally a fan of Asus at all, so they are a no. I use Linux and with X470, found the onboard sound to be a bit flaky, so not considering Gigabyte again but am not totally adverse to them.

Currently got an Asrock B550 extreme 4, really pleased with it. Ideally I'd like something similar for AM5. Also happy with MSI, so have narrowed it down to:

MSI X670E Tomahawk Wifi
MSI B650 Tomahawk Wifi
MSI B650 Carbon Wifi
Asrock B650E PG Riptide

Maximum budget is £350 or thereabouts - really don't see any need to spend more than that! PCI gen 5 not something I am particularly looking for, but if it's there and I am not paying massively over the odds then I would take it.

More of an issue is I would like to load up with M2 storage and a lot of boards run PCIE connections at a lower rate when using all M2s. Done a bit of research in the various manuals:

X670E Tomahawk wifi
  • 4x M2 slots. 4X SATA ports, 3x PCIe slots
  • PCI_E1 – 5.0 x 16
  • PCI_E2 – 3.0 x 1
  • PCI_E3 – 4.0 x 4
  • PCI_E4 – 4.0 x 2
  • PCI_E4 and M2_4 share bandwidth, M2_4 will run at x2 when a device is in PCI_E4
  • 6x rear USB type A
  • 2x rear USB type C
  • 2x USB 3 headers on motherboard
  • Rear button for BIOS flash only

B650 Tomahawk wifi
  • 3x M2 slots. 6X SATA ports, 4x PCIe slots
  • PCI_E1 – 4.0 x 16
  • PCI_E2 – 4.0 x 2
  • PCI_E3 – 3.0 x 1
  • PCI_E2 & M2_3 share bandwidth, M2_3 runs at x2 & PCI_E2 runs at x2 when both used
  • 9x rear USB type A
  • 1x rear USB type C
  • 1x USB 3 header on motherboard
  • Rear button for BIOS flash only

B650 Carbon wifi
  • 4x M2 slots. 6X SATA ports, 3x PCIe slots
  • PCI_E1 – 4.0 x 16
  • PCI_E2 – 4.0 x 4
  • PCI_E3 – 3.0 x 1
  • PCI_E1 & M2_2 & M2_3 share bandwidth, PCI_E1 will run at x8 when devices are in M2_2 and/or M2_3
  • 9x rear USB type A
  • 1x rear USB type C
  • 1x USB 3 header on motherboard
  • But does include proper rear buttons for flash CMOS and BIOS flash

Asrock B650E PG Riptide
  • 3x M2 slots. 4X SATA ports, 3x PCIe slots
  • PCI_E1 – 5.0 x 16
  • PCI_E2 – 4.0 x 1
  • PCI_E3 – 3.0 x 16
  • PCI_E3 will run at 3.0 x4 with dual graphics cards
  • 9x rear USB type A
  • 1x rear USB type C
  • 1x USB 3 header on motherboard
  • Rear button for BIOS flash only

Any recommendations or opinions? Have already watched the Buildzoid videos and now getting analysis paralysis!
