I know you guys like a good story like the one with the bloke who's breakdown cover lost his car.

So here is mine, bought a Jaguar XE 3 weeks ago, unfamiliar with the car but of course after joining some owners groups etc I got an idea of common faults, things to look for, listen for etc.

I identified a start up sound that fit with a common fault & therefore rung a couple of places that specialise in the engine fitted.

Got it checked out this morning & long story short, the timing chain is goosed & needs £2.2k throwing at it, car cost £12k, dealer informed (not a small company)

What do we think the outcome will be?

The outcome will be that you'll get your money back and the dealer gets the car back if you want to go down the rejection route.

The question is how much they'll make you work for it.

I want to keep the car, do you reckon they will stump up?

They can't really sell it on without repairing, it's a ticking timebomb.

They will likely want their best friends dogs garage to do the work and pay for just the parts.
Which unfortunately, they are legally entitled to do.

It's from JCT600 so they could easily do it themselves as they do have a local JLR dealer.

3 weeks is enough time for you to reject it iirc, especially as you have evidence. If it's within 30 days you don't even have to give them the opportunity to repair.

The learning here is that it sounds like this was a completely avoidable situation, if only you had done your research before buying.

How do i research whether a specific car has a specific issue? The symptoms were very subtle, the place i took it to were surprised I could even hear it.

They weren't even 100% sure until they got it on the diagnostics & started looking at the crank & cam sensor values.

Yeah, and it sounded like a typical diesel to me at first.

I'm not going to whip out a laptop with JLR software & do a diagnostic am I?

Although i did run torque pro on it & got no codes.

My experience with a main dealer and a very similar issue (albeit petrol vag) was.

I identified chain rattle at startup, called dealer and made them aware.

Took the car to them, they listened to it and decided it was "normal" (they all do that sir)

Circa 2 months later chain failure, engine damage

Repaired under warranty and received new engine, the car was never right, sold it a few months later as I hated the car and everything about it by the time I was done.

You could have a different experience, or could buy another car that's already had major repair etc and you'll never know but in all honesty I'd just get shot of it now.

My brother has these similar psychological connections - surely a car with a brand new engine is quite a good thing...?

Fight for your money back and avoid ANYTHING JLR in future, the thing will be a never ending money pit even if they do the chain. Japanese, some German or Swedish my boy ...

See this is my train of thought, the chain was revised in 2019, if it gets a new chain etc at no cost to myself i've now got a car with a brand new chain, i wouldn't consider that an issue, to me it's a bonus. Plus it's got a very nice spec, the only thing I can see it's missing is the 3D bird eye cameras & heated rear seats.

Plus the last owner seemed as anal as me, it's immaculate otherwise.
