Morning all, I've been running my DS215J for about 7-8 years with no issues at all, I have 2 3TB WD Red's in RAID 1 with just over 1TB free, I have a external 3TB Samsung plugged in for local backup.
In the last 3 months drive 2 which is still showing as healthy in the Synology software has been experiencing disconnect issues and the bad sector count is now up to 175 and runs about 4'c warmer than drive 1 which has no issues.
I have no need to replace the NAS or increase storage just yet but should I be looking at replacing drive 2?
If I replace the drive what should I get? My drives are the older CMR and I cant do like for like, Internet is of mixed opinion with the SMR/CMR issues and mixing drives.

Yeah just replace it. You want CMR, just buy a drive that’s marketed as being for a NAS and you should be good to go. I like Toshiba drives. Don’t forget to check the Synology compatibility list but most would be fine.

That's great thanks, typical reading to much on the internet and not getting anywhere

I think you will find all the WD RED PLUS are CMR. They released the plus range after the SMR scandal, where a number of their RED drivers were not really suitable for a NAS.

@SpellowHouse absolute life saver mate cheers, I was just about to answer you saying I was aware of that but they only come in even numbered drives but I highlighted your text and searched and just realised there's a PRO and PLUS range which I've completely missed with my blinkers on  :D
