Did you keep your sports car after having kids?

Unfortunately - I'd expect cheap EV charging will become less of a thing when the gov finds a way to tax it
going a bit OT now but this has crossed my mind with these intelligent charge points we are all getting installed at home. i imagine it would be very easy for the electricity company to give detailed energy usage to the government so they know exactly how much juice is used in cars.
in which case people may resort back to 3pin plug granny chargers which is not ideal at all as it isnt as safe for long term charging... but i digress

There is a lot to be said for the freedom of having a car you do not really care about...... i went from a cherished 350z to a nissan QQ which was a device to get from A to B nothing more.... and it was nice not panicing about every poorly parked twonk or the odd new ding i noticed on the door. (i was still careful and respectful for other people, i just didnt worry about what other people were like with my car.

now am back with a nice car again and its back to paranoia again............. i have only had our new car for a couple of weeks and we went on holiday in it.... at the holiday park when we left on friday, i moved the car to a public space after we left the caravan..... i got up nice and early and put the car on the very edge of an end space giveing whoever parked next to me a very easy park...... they obviously saw that as code for park partly in my space, their rear passenger side wheels were actually in my space.

worse still they had a child seat in the back. it would have been an absolute impossibility to get the rear car door open without hitting my car..... i can only hope they took their kid out of the car before parking.... but then had they had the thoughtfullness to do that they wouldnt have parked that an utter twerp to begin with....... luckily i can not notice any marks to the paintwork (I still need to look down the side of the car in sunlight to see if there are any tiny dents however.
Im tempted to keep my old Cmax... its a right beater and only 62k miles. But i could really do with the cash from its sale to settle some very shocking bills that just hit me this morning... needs must

Before kids, I had a caterham 7 and my wife had an mx5.

After kids I got an impreza turbo estate and my wife got a sporty Clio.

Both were great fun, but even 17 years later I still miss the 7.

About time to get another one if the kid(s) are 17?!

More performance mods?

So forgetting the purchase price (there is no man maths in the world which can make that make economic sense - other than i need to ride it out - if i keep the car for 10 years then it wont have cost me that much (ok so some man maths there ;) ))

but one of the things i love about my new car is how economical it is. right now i can charge at work for 14p a kwh and 1kwh gets me almost 3 miles on average. For an EV this is still expensive as it is an inefficient car....... but compared to my old diesel its almost free driving.

if i got an EV energy tariff at home i could charge for almost half that, but right now i make more profit by selling excess power i generate back to the grid and paying a little more to charge at work, than i do charging at home on cheaper energy. Come autumn i will move onto octopus Go or intelligent octopus and then my car charging will be laughably cheap.

Despite having solar and basically paying next to nothing for electricity in a year I have no interest in the EV route for now. I'm not ready for that transition yet. I'm happy with my 500+ miles to the tank for now!

to each their own!. nothing wrong at all with running an existing car into the ground, after all most of the cars energy / pollution debt is already paid out in its construction, no point getting rid of a perfectly good car if it still ticks your boxes.
buying a new diesel however at this point imo would make very little sense, and even a new pure petrol car would be a really hard sell for me unless you have no way of home charging... but like i said, to each their own.

My cars aren't new :)

A new car I would still struggle with an EV for now - at least for where I live. I am hankering after something a bit more sporty and I don't personally consider EVs sporty - fast acceleration sure, but that's it. I loathe Teslas other than their range and 0-60 they do nothing for me.

Believe it or not i'm hankering for a manual gearbox again I miss them!

i thought i would miss manual - certainly back in my fiat coupe and 350z days the notion of an automatic was absurd to me...... at a push i would have accepted flappy paddle semi auto.
but my EV (which i have only had for just over 2 weeks) is my 1st auto and for now at least i am not missing gears at all...... as for as teslas go.... i respect them, i am envious of their efficiency and especially their charging infrastructure but other than that they dont do much for me either...... the model S looks "ok" for what it is but the rest of them - other than the roadster - are just bland....
not driven one but i am told they are not that special as a drivers car. whilst its no 350z i am enjoying driving the ipace however...... not looking forward to single track country roads with oncoming car passing zones however... whilst its no model S size wise its still a big old lump to squeeze through tight spaces

I miss manuals too, I prefer the old school.

1 thing i would say about my EV....... it could easily lead to me losing my licence if i am not careful........ but hopefully wont end me up in jail!. I like to think i have grown up a lot since having my 350z - certainly a child made me rethink some life choices - but there were times back in the day on the M6 toll road i was doing speeds which would have potentially got me in trouble (and that is ignoring the safety aspect)
my ipace has a great 0-60 time so good for a bit of fun, and great for safe overtaking.... but its speed limited to 124mph, and given i would only dream of pushing a car to its limits on a motorway anyway, .......... it means i will hopefully keep out of jail speeds ;) (i like to tell myself i will never go over a ton again anyway on uk motorways but i could be lying to myself)

Yes the acceleration must be fun and useful. :) I took the p90D when it was new out for a spin, it really was impressive. I can only imagine more modern evs are even more so. I do like the quietness of them inside the cabin. However they're so heavy and the range for me is still something that I can't get on with - but I'm old and stubborn :p

If I were to get a sports car I know that modern ones now are mostly automatic, and I can deal with that, but there's something really nice about a gear box. I guess after 25 years of driving old habits die hard. I mean our family cars are all autos, but they're not exactly exciting cars to drive! :D
