Fibre broadband - suddenly no upload stream, at all

Hi all

There were OpenReach vans working in our lane earlier and when I got back home, suddenly the internet wasn't working properly... suspicious.

Any websites that only need download, like ocuk and radio streaming, work fine. Any that need upload like Google anything and BBC, don't work.

I'm on support chat and Twitter with the provider, TalkTalk, and OpenReach, but it's painful so far and I'm trying to 'arm' myself with information.

Is this any more complicated than OpenReach messed something up when they were working? What do I say to sort it out and who do I say it to?

Have you rebooted ONT/modem and router?
I had to turn both mine off for about 10 mins last week and then back on again to get my internet back when it dropped

Thanks and yes I switched everything off for about ten minutes and restarted it all. They have definitely ****** something up in the fibre connections going down the street.

I'm getting the usual passing the buck between OpenReach and TalkTalk.

I had something similar with Sky fibre on openreach a few weeks back. I needed up upload about 10GB to Dropbox by 9am the next morning, the only time I'd needed to upload anything of importance in 6 months and it was crawling at about 10kbs and said it would take days.

Was ******* fuming. The idiot on the phone just kept reading troubleshooting stuff off a script and not taking on board a single thing I was saying that I hard already done.

Just gave up in the end and it sorted itself out the next day. Not worth the stress and time.

Is everything green on the ONT?
Here's what the ONT looks like. The light on the far right flashes.

Everything that should be green is green, yes.

Is it not possible that physical connections in the street can somehow break upload but not download?

For you to even load a web page you have to resolve the address to its IP so you send a DNS request. You then have to establish a connection to the web server which is also a request that you send out so some degree of upload is working at least. Definitely a weird one though.

As mentioned, plug a laptop or whatever straight into the ONT and see how that goes.

Can you ping Googles DNS, 8.8.8.8? I'd try that first to check you can at least send something out. I'd be surprised if that doesn't work, so next step would be checking your DNS settings - what do you use?

Is your connection to these forums using HTTP or HTTPS? possible they've somehow broken HTTPS preventing some sites from working but not others which will still fall back.

Hi all. After some back and forth OpenReach finally confirmed they had been doing some fiddling around in the area, and during yesterday it gradually resolved itself, so I've moved on.

Thanks for all the thoughts in this thread.
