Looking to get a Ford Puma but not sure it is a good move as a family car (two young kids)

A friend is suggesting a Kia Sportage or a Hyundai Tucson

Anyone running a Ford Puma as a family car? is it ok?

any thoughts much appreciated as im quite confused.

PS. Currently have a Ford Focus

you get better headroom on the puma but width and length are smaller than the focus...
i suspect the interior space on the puma will be smaller than the focus
are you struggling for space on the focus?

No, the focus is a perfect size.

I am only changing it because its not ULEZ compliant

I am just trying to see if anyone else has a Puma and struggles with it as a family car (or not)

They're a bit smaller than the focus but in terms of interior space not a massive amount in it.

If the kids are out of their first big bulky car seats and only need a small buggy or no buggy it'll be fine, if not then I'd go and see one with all your stuff first

I’ve got to ask, what’s wrong with a Focus?

Nothing, only that i had two for the last 10 years and fancied something different (I know a Puma isnt much different, but i wanted an SUV and happened to see the PUMA which is SVU like)

the kuga is the focus on stilts in the current line up i believe (or probably the escape going forward).

Also an option its just a lot bigger and more expensive. Not ruled it out though. Other than the Puma im thinking Kia or Hyundai so far

Still in car seats and a pram

I remember when the "Puma" was an agile sporty coupe, so sad :/

I think you get more room in hatchbacks usually, it's a more efficient package. SUVs are compromised in pretty much every area just to be an SUV. Especially the "crossover" type things like the Puma

Probably fine if your only use is taking the kids to school/nursery/the park/shopping.

If you actually do things with your family (e.g. going away for the weekend, camping trips, etc.) then like most "family" cars, they are far too small for all the stuff you're going to want to carry, especially with kids at the age they still need prams/cots/48974383 nappies/23899248 changes of clothes/bottles/steriliser/etc.

I am thinking to look more towards an SUV than a hatchback.

The question is now, what should i be looking at?

You need to stop associating SUVs as the best choice when it comes to transporting families.

Most SUVs these days are fake, they are small hatchbacks on stilts. If you want an SUV you need to go larger than the crossover type and get something like a RAV4 or CRV size and even then they aren't comparable to most estate cars for their ability to shift around a family.

Unless of course it's just for the school run, you can do that in an Aygo

SUVs are just the current fad. As suggested, most are primarily hatchbacks on stilts. Yeah, let’s pay more for something that weighs more, costs more, has worse economy and will handle worse…

Puma has no room in the back really, Focus sized outside, Fiesta sized inside. Never been a fan.

MK4 Focus has loads of rear room in comparison.

Wife has the Yaris Cross Hybrid which is a small SUV shape similar to the Puma and is fine as a baseline for a family car, much more room for passengers and luggage in my 2018 civic. Yaris is better in traffic as is a hybrid. Personally not an SUV fan. I would say the Puma is likely to be an uncomfortable/occasional family car .
