4k@60hz from a R9 390? Cheapest card with native 4k@60 support?

I understand the HDMI on these cards is not the required 2.0 standard to offer 4k@60hz so I purchased an active DP to HDMI adapter which in theory should be a workaround but still, I can only get 4k@30.

I have nuked all drivers, reinstalled newer drivers, nuked and installed older drivers, swapped cables, still only getting 4k@30. The display does support 4k@60.

I understand some of the DP adapters can be hit and miss, worth trying another or shall I just give up and buy a card which natively supports 4k@60.

What would be the cheapest card to achieve 4k@60 natively? Not for gaming, desktop use and video playback.

Any "magic" solution from anyone?

Thanks for any help.

Yeah HDMI 1.4 will only do 4K 30hz. Your card does support 4K 60hz though DP 1.2.

Personally never had much luck with DP to HDMI 2.0 adapters.

Managed to find some cheap USB C to HDMI 2.0 adapters which work fine for 4K 60hz though (if you have that as an option on your motherboard or card.)

I think most Nvidia 10 series support HDMI 2.0.

There's some suggestions in this recent thread

What CPU are you using? If it's an Intel chip, then likely it will have onboard graphics that will work.

Cheapest option is a 2nd hand RX460/RX550

Ryzen 3200G.

Motherboard output is not HDMI 2.0 but read some people using 4:2:0 pixel format and this allows 4k@60 over HDMI despite the rated HDMI 1.4.

Edit: as others have stated above HDMI 2 is the key.
I checked my old B450 mobo spec. Its HDMI 2.0. When you say your mobo is HDMI 1.4, are you sure?

In terms of answering the thread question, probably a 2nd hand Nvidia 1030. Edit: AMD RX 460?

Supports HDMI with max. resolution up to 4K x 2K (4096x2160) @ 24Hz / (3840x2160) @ 30Hz
Supports HDCP 1.4 with DVI-D and HDMI Ports

HDCP 1.4 was around HDMI 1.3/1.4 versions.
HDCP 2.2 was around HDMI 2.0

One of those instances where board manufacturers do anything to save a few pence.

When you say in the first post that the display supports 4K 60, does it do that through HDMI?
My monitor is 60hz via display port only. Its HDMI is only 1.4.

It is a TV, 4k@60 over HDMI is supported, all HDMI ports are supported at HDMI 2.0.

the problem with an r9 390 for me is the way the GPU handles load, when i have one years ago with a stock cooler if would sit of 90c watching youtube.
there was no defend clocks for different loads, it was just on off

The GTX770 in my media centre dose 4k but I'm not sure at what FPS.
