It's been an eventful week. I had a gardener come and sort out my front garden and hedge.

I work from home these days need and I need the internet to work. Anyway part way through the job I lose internet. I check all the usual suspects router and modem etc.

I then go outside after a bit of chat with the gardeners we found the cut cable.

The gardener was genuinely apologetic at the time offered to compensate for the repair etc and would take it off the invoice. This is fine I get it accidents happen.

We've had a bit of back and forth over the compensation amount these past few days but we settled on £50 this was deducted from the invoice and I paid it straight away. I had considered the matter settled at this point.

An hour after payment I get a message from him

"Thanks for paying the invoice, however due to the reduced amount the green waste disposal isn't covered so will have to be returned to the property. I will be returning it to you one day this weekend."

I replied saying the reduced amount is compensation for a problem you have caused and shouldnt impact the service provided.

Not had a response to that yet.

I've got CCTV out front which should capture if he does show up.

I can't stop him if this is the action he wants take I guess all I can do is just report him for fly tipping.

Did you know there was a cable in garden and where it was.

If not how was the gardener to know ?

Irrelevant, a deal was made (all be it a gentlemans one).

If he does dump it, report him for fly tipping, and then hit his Google reviews.

Edit: Does the invoice mention the £50 reduction, and for what reason?

Yeah I knew the cable was there I understand it was accident it could have happened to any gardener black cable on black tarmac it's hard to see. I not bothered by that just the aftermath of how it's been handled.

The invoice just stated Discount £50

I think the gardener was testing to see if you were going to actually go through with it with his offer. 50 comp is neither here nor there, so presumably you are penalising him for you not running a cable properly that is easily replaced?

He's now throwing toys out of the pram just like you did, for what seems like a genuine accident because some numpty didn't lay a cable properly.

Harsh, but true.

I didn't lay the cable virgin media did. They normally put them in bright green trunking they didn't on this occasion. When they eventually get round to replacing the cable I'll request they use that trunking

So you've charged the gardener 50 quid for virgin media not doing their job properly?

Cables run up the side of houses into windowframes and telephone wires too close to tops of hedges are way too easy to cut with hedgecutters/trimmers (may have some experience)

One customer was so irate he was basically yelling at the boss to fix it, he wired it with a couple of terminal blocks and some black tape it was a one off job so we were long gone before it might become an issue

Got any pics (of the cable not that gardener ) so we can see. I'm struggling to understand why a cable would run along something and not be tucked away. It sounds daft but when we had fibre to the house put I'm, no digging was needed despite there being an expanse of grass, wasn't sure why it wasn't used for you.

He's not come back so I think this over now.

The cable comes in from the street out front. It runs through the garden VM buried it in the soil. It does have to exit at the garden border which is done at the closest point to tge wall where it enters the wall box

It's been pinned to the pavers in an effort to keep it neat. I think it's been clipped by a strimmer when he was doing the borders.

Never thought of it tbh. I've had other gardeners do the same work before without issue. I will be making the next gardener aware for sure.

They were lucky, tbh I wouldn’t have been compensating you nothing. Time to get sorted out properly instead of waiting for the next poor sod to inevitably end up doing the same.

Lucky or maybe they are just more competent at their job. Anyway it will be sorted when VM come out and replace the cable and route it through luminous green conduit
Explain?
