Spec me an NVidia 4070 please (to replace my prehistoric 1070)...

I'm in the same dilemma, really want to replace my MSI 1070 Gaming X (which has been brilliant) for Starfield among other things (including a occasional bit of VR). The 4070 seems a good replacement as I don't want to have to upgrade my 650W PSU either really and its low power draw is ideal. The price, for what's really a 60 class GPU and even though I have the money is hard to swallow though...

£569 aint going to break the bank, its a lot easer to swallow then £800 for the 12gb 4070ti and £1100+ 4080.

LOL! Replacing the same gaphics card as me :) Couldn't believe it has served me so well for over 6yrs!

Your 650W PSU is minimum spec I believe for the 4070 so you should be OK. At the moment I'm favouring the ASUS 4070 Dual OC.

Yeah its been a good servant fair play!

Been put off ASUS recently, seems to be a lot of iffy build quality issues reported, no idea if there's substance in them or not. But I really like the look of the founders card to be honest..

The 650w should be okay. Quality of Asus motherboards has plumited and their reputation in general is heading south.

Still x2 faster than a 1070, if going Nvidia this gen it's either 4060 or the 4070 if not looking to break the bank.

4070 aka 4080 would have been my preferred choice but there is no chance I'm paying over a grand for that so I was happy to sell my 3060ti and put the extra £300 towards the 4070 as a stop gap until 5 Gen Nvidia. Plenty powerful enough for my needs.

Bet you the 4070 is a lot more and 2x the speed of a 1070, especially at 1440p and with more detail enabled.

Note: I paid about £430 for my MSI 1070 Gaming X over 6yrs ago. So while £580 for a 4070 now may sound like sort of a lot, but compared to £430 from 6yrs years ago, it sort of feels much the same I guess...

If you have to get one then get the FE over an ASUS dual as the build quality will be much better but really I would not want to be endorsing what Nvidia has done this generation unless you want to see this continue going forward.

Also don’t expect to get 6 years out of a 4070 either as this is a much weaker card by todays standards than a 1070 was back then, for instance a GTX1070 offered nearly 70% of the performance of a 1080ti and had 73% of the vram whereas a 4070 only has 50% of the performance and VRAM of a 4090 which may not even be the best card Nvidia release this gen. The 4070 is the modern day successor to the GTX1060 despite a near £600 asking price.

I would have thought the build quality of the Asus Dual would have been better... Especially as it results in a cooler/quieter card?

I guess it depends where you’re looking but this review found both noise and temps to be worse on the ASUS dual over the FE.

Well, that's very interesting. Wonder why all the other reviews show it around the other way.

It was only yesterday I noticed the FE actually has two fans and not just one.

QUESTION: Am I right in saying to upgrade from my NVidia 1070 to an NVidia 4070 I simply take the old card out, and put the new one in, and voila? ie: No need to uninstall drivers and re-install drivers?
